You GO Dan Scott!!!

Dan's book is not only informative and intriguing, but it hits at the spiritual nerve of those of us who have complained for years about the hypocrisy of the Church preaching one thing and yet doing another. He addresses the "why's", "how's" and what to do to get help when our carnal lives are not in alignment with our spiritual lives. He does it with compassion, eloquence and humor as only Dan Scott can do. He loves God with all of his heart and this book is a true testiment to that truth....He also loves God's follower's and is willing to hold Christians accountable and challenge us to stop making excuses for behavior that can be changed and not "prayed away". Phenomenal writing and content. Everyone can benefit from reading this book, not just your pastor. You go Dan Scott!!!

Tearing Down the Facade

This book is not so much about taking off one's clothes as about taking off one's mask. It's not about arousal techniques but about healthy sexuality--physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Healthy sexuality is not about using a condom, but according to Scott, about linking the physical and spiritual components of humanness in order to achieve the deepest and most fulfilling levels of intimacy. It's about redeeming sex from the ubiquitous narcissism of the prevailing culture and centering it squarely in the context of covenant. Rarely does a book about sex explore these more profound levels, but this one does! With asides to Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, yet sprinkled with dozens of anecdotes drawn from his wide experience as a therapist, Dan Scott tackles the most relevant and difficult issues: sexual imagination, ecstasy, masturbation, addiction, deprivation, neurosis, perversion, obsession, abuse and the pathway toward recovery. This work is thoroughly Christian, yet thoroughly up-to-date (a combination that I would suppose many believe to be impossible). It is deeply compassionate, but it minces no words. Most important, Scott refuses to dance around those areas clouded by family dysfunction or distortion from embedded experience. Strange as it may seem, he repeatedly links sexuality with the dynamics of spirituality and worship, both by analogy and symbiosis. He truly captures the profound nuance of the ancient line from the Book of Common Prayer that once was a regular part of any marriage ceremony: "with my body I thee worship". Finally, the book is funny, because life and sex is often funny! Don't miss this one!

Outstanding Resource

Over the course of the last two years, I have read numerous books that deal with the subject of sexuality from a Christian perspective. Most of the books were very good, and I gained a lot from reading them. However, I would place this book near the very top of the list (along with "Sacred Sex" by Tim Gardner).

I have found that the most beneficial books on this topic present a perspective that causes the reader to really "think through" the issues for himself/herself, using a biblical framework as a point of reference. In this way, the person can truly "internalize" God's perspective - and God's principles - regarding his/her sexuality.

When this happens, the believer can learn how to "manage" his/her sexuality in a way that is not "legalistic", but "empowering". He/she learns how to "accept" and "celebrate" his/her sexuality, while at the same time respect and abide by God's "boundaries" in this area of life (which God established for our own benefit and protection).

Dan Scott does a masterful job at presenting his material in this manner. In addition, he effectively deals with the many ways in which people can develop unhealthy patterns in the handling of their sexuality. He shows why and how this can happen, and what can be done to obtain "healing" from these unhealthy perspectives and practices.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to benefit from a balanced, biblical perspective on the subject of our sexuality. It will inspire the reader to "thank God" for creating him/her as a sexual being. It will also provide sound reasoning and teaching on why it is so important to manage one's sexuality within God's limits and boundaries.

Great Echo Text

I have recently completed fellowship and have recently taken the cardiology boards.

Over the last year I have used/borrowed the textbooks by Weyman, Feigenbaum, Otto, and have owned the most recent baby Otto.

The Echo Manual is the best single source for a new cardiology fellow and for anyone studying for the Echo boards. The clarity, depth, and breadth in such are small package are not matched by any of the other books. It has excellent diagrams and tables. It does a great job of covering complex topics such as diastology, constriction vs restriction, and congenital heart disease.
The Weyman is out of print. The big Otto is too big for board review. The baby Otto is too simple to be of help to fellows and techs. The Feigenbaum is a good book and it comes with a DVD of examples. However, the Echo Manual simply covers the topics better. It works great as a board-review book and just as great as a reference. If you only have room for one book in your budget, I would recommend this book.

Cons: No DVD. Mayo displays the R and L heart in reverse of everyone else. Text can be dense. Overall, these are minor gripes.

This is an ideal text for a general cardiology fellow. Just the right level of detail. Mayo way of displaying images can be a bit frustrating for those in other institutions that do not use the Mayo format.

An excellent overview book

I am a professor in computer security. I found the book to be an excellent way to get an introduction to applying data mining techniques to problems such as intrusion detection. People in the security field will probably find the 2nd and 3rd chapters to be introductory in nature and something they largely know. However, the book picks up pace from Chapter 4 onwards. Chapters 4-7 contain a wealth of information on some key research projects that are investigating the applicability of data mining and data warehousing techniques to cyber-security. While information on these projects can be found elsewhere as well, this book does a nice job of bringing them together in one collection. The book should serve as an excellent starting reference for researchers and practitioners who are interested in investigating the use of data mining techniques to cyber-security.

I have been trying to research and implement a Network Intrusion Detection System using Data mining techniques as part of my school project. Last week while browsing through some of the data mining books in a book store, I came across this book. After going through the book I found out that it's just a collection of information that is freely available over the web and some IEEE papers. So, I would not reccommend this book to any folks who are interested in knowing about data mining techniques for cyber security.

This book brought tremendous nostalgia of a place that used to be home. I loved the quote on the back cover.
It was wonderful to know the author/photographer through hs writing and works. His pioneering effort established a world class photography collective that crossed boundaries and achieved international spread. Remarkable work made more remarkable given the circumstances. Bravo!

About the Author
Juha Heinonen (1960 2007) was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan. His principal areas of research interest included quasiconformal mappings, nonlinear potential theory, and analysis on metric spaces. He was the author of over 60 research articles, including several posthumously, and two textbooks. A member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, Heinonen received the Excellence in Research Award from the University of Michigan in 1997 and gave an invited lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing in 2002.

This is a well-written book. While containing
cutting-edge topics in analysis on metric spaces,
it is also accessible to students who have had
a good course in measure theory, a reasonable course
in topology, and a nodding aquaintance with
functional analysis!

Broad, concise sweep of the research area

This book is intended as an introduction to some modern topics that now comprise the field of "analysis on metric spaces". This is an active research area, closely interacting with many other fields such as fractal geometry, complex analysis, sub-Riemannian geometry, geometric group theory, and more. The primary topics covered are metric Sobolev spaces, quasisymmetric maps, and metric measure spaces.

This book is a polished version of Heinonen's notes from a class he taught at Michigan. That means it offers a brief, broad sweep of the field, picking out some highlights and helping a newcomer orient themself without attempting to be comprehensive. The style aims at being elegant and concise--sometimes at the expense of precision and detail. This book alone is probably insufficient for one to really grasp the material. Fortunately Heinonen includes a fairly extensive bibiliography with some 200 references; hence this book can be seen as a springboard for more in-depth study, especially by reading the original papers.

The difficulty of the book really depends on your mathematical maturity and any prior acquaintance with the subject matter. In my case, this is the first book my advisor (actually a student of Heinonen) had me read. Some of the topics required some motivation on his part, and maybe some supplemental reading, before they really made sense.

I don't know of any book that is equivalent, though a few similar ones exist. The closest would be "Topics in Analysis on Metric Spaces" by Ambrosio and Tilli, which covers similar material but more from the vantage point of geometric measure theory (whereas Heinonen's book comes from the tradition of quasiconformal mappings). Perhaps one would also consider "A Course in Metric Geometry" by Burago, Burago, and Ivanov, though their focus is on Alexandrov geometry.

Unfortunately, three different doctors misdiagnose his ailments as being "nervous stomach." One doctor even tells him to "stop being a baby." From there, his condition worsens, and the retelling goes into deep detail about the path he took to diagnosis, from clinical tests to exploratory surgery. The journey then hits a downward slope, as post-operative complications become draining and even life-threatening, before a bounce-back recovery and ultimate victory over a serious infection related to Crohn's Disease.

Along the way, the reader will join the author on the emotional and physical roller coaster ride that is involved with inflammatory bowel disease. From hilarious scenes in clinical settings - the author at one point, under anesthetic, randomly asks a nurse to marry him - to emotional insights that will bring tears, the book engages from the outset and doesn't let go.

This book is for anyone who is faced with adversity and wants to throw in the towel (toilet paper?). Gibson's story is inspiring, and his perseverance through extreme illness is simply amazing. The guy should be dead, plain and simple. The fact that he is alive to write this book is a testimony to his stubbornness and spirit. The book will make you laugh many times; it will make you cry a little; and it will make you long for the days of $4 pizza. Anyone who feels like the crisis they are facing is insurmountable need to read this book as an important reminder that things can work out all right in the end.

The candor with which this book is written was such a welcome surprise. I laughed, numerous times. I cried, thankfully, not as often. You don't need to have Crohn's Disease to get something out of this book. The positivity expressed by the author is enough to make the read well worth it.

Honest, heartbreaking and hysterical....

Anyone who lives with a chronic disease or has suffered through the pain and frustration of a mis-diagnosis (or diagnoses, in the author’s instance), will find a bit of their own story in this book. From tears to laughter, the author captures the full range of emotions attached to a medical crisis and I cried and laughed right along with him as I read it. What I like most about the book is that it is honest when dealing with the harsh realities of the diagnosis but it also maintains an undercurrent of hope throughout. I cannot recommend this book enough.

ARISTOTLE (384 BC - 322 BC), translated by Thomas TAYLOR (1758 - 1835)

The Rhetoric was developed by Aristotle during two periods when he was in Athens, the first between 367 to 347 BCE (when he was seconded to Plato in the Academy), and the second between 335 to 322 BCE (when he was running his own school, the Lyceum). The Rhetoric consists of three books. Book I offers a general overview, presenting the purposes of rhetoric and a working definition; it also offers a detailed discussion of the major contexts and types of rhetoric. Book II discusses in detail the three means of persuasion that an orator must rely on: those grounded in credibility (ethos), in the emotions and psychology of the audience (pathos), and in patterns of reasoning (logos). Book III introduces the elements of style (word choice, metaphor, and sentence structure) and arrangement (organization). Some attention is paid to delivery, but generally the reader is referred to the Poetics for more information in that area.

I am working on a paper based on this book, and I have a print and this edition. There is a lot missing from this Kindle edition. I'm glad I happen to purchase the hard copy Dover edition as well, or I never would have known.

Great book, decent translation.

All modern rhetoric is a commentary on Aristotle, Not the absolute best translation, but a sound and clear one for those of who left our Loeb's in the other coat and were more comfortable with NT Greek than Classical anyway.
