About the Author
Antonio De Maio is an Associate Professor at the University of Naples "Federico II". His research interest lies in the field of statistical signal processing, with emphasis on radar detection and convex optimization applied to radar signal processing. Fulvio Gini is Full Professor at the University of Pisa. His research interests include modeling and statistical analysis of radar clutter data, non-Gaussian signal detection and estimation, parameter estimation and data extraction from multichannel interferometric SAR data. Lee K. Patton is a senior research engineer at the Matrix Research & Engineering, Dayton (OH), where he conducts research in radar signal processing and waveform design.

If you design sophisticated radar systems, you need this book.

Every radar design book from Skolnik on down treats the design and analysis of radar waveforms. These days waveforms are everything, as radars have nearly exhausted to parameters of power and duty cycle in trying to achieve improvements in range, Doppler capability, resolution, and reduced false-alarm rate. So what is left to improve lies mainly in the realm of mathematics. It goes over the basics of various types of pulse coding, adds an information-theory approach, and treats multi-static and passive bi-static geometries. Then it takes an interesting tour through biological radar systems (which are surprisingly sophisticated), followed by a thorough treatment of auto radar sonar systems. Then back to sophisticated approaches to pulse compression, space-time diversity, waveform performance in target classification and tracking. Finally there is a discussion of signal-dependent clutter, and how to optimize the receiver for it. This British IET book is written by various authors, so the treatment is slightly uneven, but in general the level of treatment is high.

The Darcy's First Christmas: A Sweet Tea Novella.........

This is a well written novel that will have you happy and sad and then happy again. I loved the part of the explanation of the yule log and the wishes spoken by Darcy upon placing the yule log in the fireplace. It sounds like a great tradition and I knew they used it but not the oil, salt, and wine and it also is very touching to those in attendance.
The author brings to light their mistakes in Darcy and Elizabeth's misunderstandings and how they solve them but their is heartache and loneliness for both along the way. All is resolved once most of the company leaves and love continues throughout the house.
You can always count on the closeness of Darcy and the Colonel to bring joy and togetherness and Ms. Grace brings that out in her writings.
Old traditions along with new traditions begin this first Christmas that was shared at Pemberley.
I loved the novel and in each life some sadness does bring much joy!

A Christmas to Remember....

A very sweet story of, as the title states, The Darcys' First Christmas. This lovely celebration occurs only weeks after their wedding, and threatens to become a most disharmonious gathering as the Bennets and the Gardiners join Lizzy, William, and Georgiana at Pemberley, but Lady Catherine and Anne arrive, the former only to find fault. But the first guests to arrive are Lord and Lady Matlock, the latter of whom is far more stubborn than the infamous Lady Catherine in getting her own way.

Darcy makes several missteps that unintentionally put Lizzy at a decided disadvantage, and Georgiana hides in her room, afraid of her Aunt Matlock and avoiding the guests. When the harum-scarum Bennets arrive, all you-know-what breaks loose, and the Christmas celebrations become far more than Lizzy can handle...or bear.

A lovely follow-up to Pride and Prejudice, Maria Grace's novella takes us in a very different direction as Lizzy and William learn much about love and marriage in the hot water of disharmonious family relations in which his family is actually more troublesome than her own.... ;)

Definitely worth a read--thoroughly entertaining!

Our Lizzie - unsure of herself and undermined by who?

I loved this story about the Darcys' First Christmas. But I do have to say I agree with another's comment about how Elizabeth was written out-of-character. Maria Grace has posted excerpts of this novella on several of her blogs. When I read of a certain bad aunt's (And, No, it was not Lady Catherine.) behavior I make a comment on that blog that I was sure Elizabeth was going to use her quick wit to come back at this person with perfect put downs and use her ability to draw on past statements to refute demands. After all we have read of her astute manner in handling Lady Catherine while confronting her in that little wilderness at Longbourn.

Unfortunately, (or should I say, Once again) we read of this couple misunderstanding the actions of the each other. And they can't seem to get up the courage to speak plainly as to "just what happened and why?"

The story has us reading of how Darcy and Elizabeth have sorted out their daily routine and chores. Elizabeth has found a friend, a mentor and wise guide in Mrs. Reynolds who gently gives opinions about past practices - good or bad. But she also lets Elizabeth know that no one is perfect and even Lady Anne had her moments of doubt, of bad judgments and wrong decisions. Long kept journals are given to Elizabeth so she can read of past dinners, receipts, balls, menus, etc. Darcy and Elizabeth visit some of the tenants together and we read as Elizabeth comes to know and be known to these people.

But the fly in the ointment comes while Elizabeth is out visiting tenants alone one day and unexpected guests show up. Darcy had to make some quick but necessary decisions and when Elizabeth does come back to the manor she misunderstands as some of those decisions (....no, to her it is all of those decisions) seem to undermine her position as Mistress of Pemberley. Here we find an Elizabeth who keeps her feelings inside and who avoids Darcy’s gaze and who is suddenly mute. (This is the out-of-character Elizabeth for me.)

Georgiana and Colonel Fitzwilliam are part of the story and one seems to add to the distress in the home while the other one looks on and gives some sage advice as the unease in the household is observed. Darcy's and Elizabeth's thoughts about how alone they feel does cause some anxious moments while reading but we do know that we will have a happy ending.

At 91% on my kindle we have the lighting of the Yule Log and the author writes a most touching speech for Darcy here, "Let us consider the year past. Our faults, mistakes and bad choices. Let us allow the flames to consume those that we may begin the coming year with a clean slate. With that as our starting place, let us purpose to improve our faults, correct our mistakes and make improved choices."

And after we reach our happy conclusion Maria Grace gives us descriptions and explanations of all those Regency traditions.

This story is so much more than I have written here. Even though Christmas 2015 has passed I truly enjoyed this short story. I recommend it to all.

The original idea for this book came from the realization that there were few comprehensive sources available with practical information about computer applications and information systems in health care. From its inception this book was envisioned as a guide for nurses and other health care professionals who needed to learn how to adapt and use computer applications in the workplace. As the outline developed it became apparent that this book could also serve as an informatics text for students in the health care professions. This second edition contains updates and revisions to reflect changes that have occurred in the rapidly evolving technology and health care field since the book was first written.

Each of the authors has a long-standing interest and involvement in nursing informatics. In fact, the same idea that inspired this book also led a group of nurses that included the authors to form the Tri-State Nursing Computer Network user group in 1988. This organization remains active, and has recently changed its name to Tri-State Healthcare Informatics Professionals, with an expanded focus to include other informatics professionals in addition to nurses.

This book is divided into three sections. The first section, General Computer Information, reviews information common to all information systems. It assumes no prior knowledge of or experience with computers. Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the role of informatics in contemporary health care. Chapter 2 reviews basic information and terminology related to computer hardware and software. The section on the roles of various support personnel has been expanded. Chapter 3 emphasizes the importance of maintaining data integrity and suggests some practical steps to ensure current, accurate data in health care information systems. The fourth chapter addresses basic Internet use to support health care. The discussion on search tools and intranets has been expanded and content has been added on portals, e-health, and e-care. Additional information on Internet use and resources are found in the appendices at the end of the book.

The second section, Health Care Information Systems, covers information and issues related to the use of computers and information systems in health care. This section bridges the gap between the theory and practice of nursing informatics. Chapter 5 covers basic information on health care information systems, including decision support and expert systems. Chapters 6 through 15 discuss all aspects of selecting, implementing, and operating these systems. Chapters 6 through 9 discuss the processes of overall and system strategic planning, system selection, implementation, and training. Chapter 8 now contains additional information on testing, system evaluation, and strategies to implement system changes after system installation. Other pertinent topics are addressed in the remaining chapters. Chapter 10 discusses information security and confidentiality; Chapter 11, system integration; and Chapter 12, the computerized patient record. Chapter 13, Regulatory and Accreditation Issues, has been updated to include a review of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and its implications for nursing informatics and health care professionals. Chapter 14 covers community health information networks and Chapter 15 covers disaster planning and recovery.

Section III covers three specialty applications of computers in health care. Chapter 16 discusses ways that computers can support health care education. It now contains content on Web-based education. The title of Chapter 17 has been changed since the first edition from Telemedicine to Telehealth to reflect the growing acceptance of telehealth as a broader term. This chapter explores the growing field of telehealth, which uses computer and teleconferencing technology to provide top-quality health care to clients all over the world. Chapter 18 looks at ways that computers are increasingly being used in nursing and other health care research.

Four appendices are included at the end of the book. The first three provide detailed information on getting up and running on the Internet, using the Internet to perform a job search, and Internet resources of special interest to health care professionals. The fourth appendix provides suggested answers to the case studies that are found at the end of every chapter.

Each chapter contains pedagogical aids that help the readers learn and apply the information discussed. Learning objectives let the readers know what they can expect to learn from the chapter. Case studies at the end of each chapter discuss common, real-life applications, which review and reinforce the concepts presented in the chapter. Each chapter also includes a summary and list of references. The Glossary at the back of the book serves to familiarize readers with the vocabulary used in this book and in health care informatics.

We recognize that health care professionals have varying degrees of computer and informatics knowledge. One of the features of this book is that it does not assume that the reader has prior knowledge of computers. All computer terms are defined in the text and in the Glossary. This book may be used the following different ways:

It may serve as a reference for nurses and other clinicians involved in system design, selection, and implementation. About the Author

Toni Hebda, RN, PhD, is a nurse clinician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She has worked as a system analyst and adjunct faculty for Duquesne University School of Nursing, having taught both nursing informatics and clinical courses. Her interest in informatics provided a focus for her dissertation and subsequently led her to help establish a regional nursing informatics support group and obtain a graduate degree in information science and ANCC certification as informatics nurse. She is a reviewer for the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics.

 

Patricia Czar, RN, is an Information Systems Consultant. She has been active in informatics for more than 25 years, serving as manager of clinical systems at a major medical center where she was responsible for planning, design, implementation, and ongoing support for all of the clinical information systems. She has been an active member of several informatics groups and has presented nationally and internationally. Ms. Czar has served as mentor for nursing and health informatics students and has a Microcomputer Specialist certificate.

Book did not keep my attention.

I bought this book because it was required for one of my nursing classes. The book was in very good condition when it arrived. The content of the book is much to be desired. It was very dry and did not keep my attention. The topic of the book is, however, a difficult one to make sound 'fun' and unfortunately, this book did not capture it either.

Save Money and Buy The Old Edition

The differences between this edition and the 7th edition are grossly overstated. The principles and concepts remain the same with minor changes apparent. Indeed, the author does not provide any examples of 'new and improved' changes. Readers will pay a overwhelming premium for nothing more than a slicker format and "co-author" englossed beneath the title.

About the Author
Paul Mathews is president of Mathews Malnar and Bailey, Inc., a provider of quality engineering and applied statistical consulting and training services for R&D, product, process, and manufacturing engineering organizations. Paul has almost 30 years of experience as an engineer, scientist, professor, and consultant. He received a B.S. degree in physics from Miami University (1981) and an M.S. degree in physics from Case Western Reserve University (1986). Paul also holds ten patents and is the author of Design of Experiments with MINITAB (2005, ASQ Quality Press). Paul is a member of the American Statistical Association and a senior member of the American Society for Quality. In his free time, Paul and his wife Kathy race and cruise their sailboat Whitehawk on Lake Erie.
