Misleading product info

I'm giving this one star because the item description does not tell you there is a video that goes along with the guide. It's impossible to work through the study guide without the video, and since there are many self help study guides that do not require a video it didn't occur to me to look for one for this book. After further search on Amazon I see that the study guide is sold WITH the DVD as well, but in this particular listing, the study guide is sold separately. My one star rating is a warning to other buyers. I did buy Chip's book by the same name thinking the book and study guide went together however this is not the case; I thought that since I did not have the video I would follow the guide by the chapters in the book, but corresponding chapters are not listed. This may in fact be possible but how much simpler to just follow the video. So buyer be warned! I do believe the principles in the book are invaluable and recommend the item for that reason.

A great bible study for small groups. his was wonderful and led our class to ordering another of Chip Ingram's series afterward. There were so many tools, high points and low points, not to mention Chip's delivery during the lessons.

Very helpful study

I purchased several of these books for a ladies study and also found the video. We all thoroughly enjoyed the study, very helpful and listening to Chip was like getting advice from your Grandpa! There was no pounding it into you like some studies rather a gentle what if you try it this way. Would highly recommend this study for everyone, men, women, teens!

About the Author
Hermann Hesse was born in Germany in 1877 and later became a citizen of Switzerland. As a Western man profoundly affected by the mysticism of Eastern thought, he wrote many novels, stories, and essays that bear a vital spiritual force that has captured the imagination and loyalty of many generations of readers. His works include Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund, and The Glass Bead Game. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. Hermann Hesse died in 1962.

A novel about youth: idealism and romanticism

Hesse's first book is an enjoyable novel about youth in search of the ideal and touched by the romantic. Written by Hesse in 1904 when he was 26, it is a precursor to his famous works. In Peter Camenzind, Hesse reveals a naivety, innocence and humor that is rarely found in his later writings.
Here is an excerpt that relects the lyrical quality of young Hesse:
"These thoughtless words made me realize that the helpless cripple, beseeching, suffering Boppi, whom we did not love, whom we wanted to get rid of, sat sad and alone, locked in one room....And then I remembered that I had told the neighbors in Assisi about St. Francis and had boasted that he had taught me to love all mankind. Why had I studied the saint's life and learned by heart his hymn to love and tried to retrace his footsteps in the Umbrian hills, when I allowed a poor and helpless creature to lay there suffering though I could help him?
The weight of an invisible, mighty hand fell on my heart, crushing it with shame and hurt, and I began to tremble. I know that God wanted a word with me."

Phenomenal. This book was recommended by a friend and it drew me in so seamlessly. It's a beautiful book and so thoughtfully written, it is poetry to read. Reading this brought me more fully to myself.

THE FARTHER ONE TRAVELS, THE LESS ONE KNOWS

I was having a hard time trying to decide which novel of Hesse I would use to introduce myself to his work. By and by I came to the idea that i should start at the beginning with his first novel. So I opened up Peter Camenzind, his first work published in 1906. While it smells a bit of first time novel immaturity, it more than makes up for this in reading the first rumblings of his beautiful style.
As anyone versed in Eastern religion as Hermann Hesse was, you gradually come to learn that sometimes knowledge comes to you only when you do not seek it. This is the case with Peter Camenzind, a young Swiss goatherd who comes to age in what he sees as the stifling atmosphere of his village, Nimikon. Peter spends most of his time avoiding work and climbing mountains. Gazing down at his village, he feels hemmed in. Only when he gazes at the horizon, at all the lands beyond his, does the stirring of his heart begin. He longs to see distant lands. He feels "something quivering within me, like a compass striving with great energy, unconsciously, toward those great distances".
His life would probably have been uneventful except a priest takes notice of him and Peter is given an education. He begins to learn that more knowledge just brings more sadness. The rest of his life is spent trying to reach the unattainable, or to put it better, God. He seeks Him through all different types of routes. He tries to find Him in the love of women, through writing poetry, and through friendship.
It is in his relationships that his story becomes the most poignant. He is searching for the spirit that moves in all things and hopes to discover this through love. But just as in work, he never seems to make the effort when he needs to. He falls in love with a woman and never gets around to telling her. By the time he does she is married or fixing to be. Hesse's message seems to be at odds with Peter because the whole knowledge coming to you theme is really Peter's undoing. He never seizes the moment.
To me, this novel is a tragedy, not the spiritual affirmation that I hear Hesse's novels are. On the back cover it says that Camenzind finds inner peace. He doesn't. He may be a little wiser but he is no happier. This book is one of loneliness. It seems almost the equivalent of a strong drink.

Crappy dates, backstabbing friends, and Sage's cold shoulder have taken their toll.

Just no.

I wanted to like this book. I did. But I didn't like it. Let me give my reasons. Of course, other disagree with me and you should read their reviews too. Decide for yourself.

My reasons for not liking this book...

This is not how teens act anymore. As a middle school teacher, I hang out with 11-13 years olds daily. I have a lot of former students come back to visit me. Needless to say, I know how they do act. Not like this. They don't wait three years to realize and do something about breaking up with a boy. They don't only kiss one boy at age 13 and then not again until their 17 with no other kisses in-between. They don't put up with fake friends that they can't stand for 3 years. They don't obsess over Star Wars. (They did that 20 or so years ago but not now. Other movies have taken it's place).

The List. Really there is a list of ways to unbreakup. And, yes, she does everything on the list. She probably should have started at the end and instead of the first. But what really made me crazy was the "Vacation style" of what happened. Really, I was expecting the Griswold Family to show up. Everything that could go wrong with her list, went wrong. Of course, that might have been funny if that was all. No this kinda plays into my next issue but each event was kinda stand alone with no real follow-up of what happened right after. Scenes just changed like they weren't alive until the next big event happened.

Flat Characters. Because the scenes just sort of were stuck together, the characters fell flat. It was like each event on the list was written separately and then made it's own chapter with nothing to hold them together in the middle. Several times, I thought "why wouldn't he come ask her about this later?" They were sharing a loft with a bunch of bunk beds. Didn't they ever run into each other until the next event happened?

Jealous, really? So a brother and sister happen to live next door to where they are staying for the summer. And, of course, the sister is into Sage and the brother is into Grace. They show up at just the right moment to mess things up for Grace if she just told Sage how she felt. It seemed clear to me that the whole story could have happened in a short if she had just told Sage how she felt. And why did it take her 3 years to decide she still loved him when it took her about 30 seconds to decide to break up with him. I get that there needs to be a story but this feels forced and, unfortunately, predictable.

It's a figuring out who you are kinda of story. But really, it's what adults want to think about teens and not what teens are really like. I don't think that will fly with most teens. They see through that pretty easily.

I just couldn't get past my issues to enjoy this one. It felt forced and fell flat. It's a great premise but I just didn't enjoy it. About the only thing I liked was when Sage figured things out and took things in his own hands.

What I liked: This story was super cute and I really enjoyed it. I read it in several back to back sittings between real life things because I couldn't wait to figure out what was going to happen next with these two! Grace is that girl that I connected with because she's a gamer, loves sports, and loves Star Wars. Sage was perfect for her, because even though he was a bit of a jerk in the beginning, as Grace does her best to rekindle their broken friendship he becomes much warmer and sweeter as time goes on. I thought their moments were really great, they complement each other so well in the way they are. Grace is funny, and she has several moments where she had me smiling and laughing throughout the book. I really enjoyed how close Grace was to her best friend as well as Sage's sister, because I love it when a book has girls being friends, close and best friends, with other girls. It sells the story because it's very believable to me! Of course, there's always a little drama in the story and I really liked the spin on it.

What I didn't like: I don't believe that Grace would go all that time without dating or even kissing another guy. I mean, it was three years before she finally got around to trying to unbreakup with Sage. If she was popular that meant there were plenty of guys who would have tried to date her and I was certain that she at least dated a few, maybe four at the most with the type of person she seemed to be. But she dated no one and that always bothers me, because it's unrealistic. Yeah, you can break up with someone, be really into them still and date and kiss other people. It's really not all that difficult to do and this trend is a little bit worn out to me because it's not something I've ever seen in other teenagers.

Overall Review: A fun story with great characters all around, I really liked this story and the way it played out. I was rooting for Grace more and more as I learned about her and watched her grow over the story as she tried her best to unbreakup with Sage. I loved how she went about it for the most part and was herself with him and the others, though I wish I could have seen how she acted when she was in school after she became popular, that would have been plenty of fun to read.

Recommend?: Definitely! It's a really cute, swoony, and fun story!

Probably need to check for cavities now; this is a super sweet, innocent YA romance.

Grace and Sage were childhood friends, the best of friends, and each other's first romance/kiss. They grew up together in wholesome Michigan, with parents who are BFFs and plan joint trips. In eighth grade Sage asked Grace to be his girlfriend, and she agreed, but it got a bit much for her to handle. Her friends complained that she was always with him, and she felt like she didn't have an identity of her own. Plus, she didn't really feel ready, anymore, to be in a relationship. And, I felt this was ALL AWESOME. I love when young girls are cool being alone. Grace wanted to maintain their strong friendship, but Sage never talked to her after that, and started skipping their joint family get-togethers.

Three years goes by and neither Grace nor Sage has ever dated anyone. Grace knows she's still hung up on Sage, but he still holds a grudge. It's the summer following junior year, and the big surprise vacation is again to link the two families for a summer long rental beach house in the UP (Upper Peninsula). Grace is anxious, seeing Sage again at close quarters, but Sage is hostile. Hell hath no fury like a scorned Sage, it seems.

Sage's sister, Allie, can clearly see how Grace cares for Sage, however--and Allie knows how depressed Sage was after their break-up, so Allie decides to help Grace win him back. They devise a list of ten tasks that Grace should attempt to unfreeze Sage's heart, and *hopefully* win him back. Of course this plan is destined to crash and burn...hijinks ensue.

In the meantime, while Grace works up the courage to check off Item 10 on her list (apologize for hurting Sage all those years ago, and confess her deep love), he finds a local girl who is very much interested in him. Lila is a pretty pin-up of a girl who shares none of Sage's interests, but does captivate his attention. Her elder brother, Logan, is equally attractive, and interested in Grace. Allie insists that this may be helpful (Item 6: Make Sage jealous) but Grace isn't the mercenary sort. She doesn't discourage Logan, but she keeps everything friendly, even confiding her true feelings for Sage to a very understanding Logan.

Thing is, as the days and weeks pass, Grace realizes that Sage is happier now, and that he seems to get on well with Lila. Grace completes her task list, leaving it all up to Sage.

Well, this is YA romance, so we get an HEA, but we take the angsty-way around to it.

The story is well-told, with only a few slapstick elements, and a whole lotta good-natured ribbing and family bonding. The tension between Sage and Grace is always high, and this non-courtship is fun to experience. Sage and Grace have a lot of shared history, and rediscovering together it is touching. I like how level-headed Grace is, she doesn't get catty, or plan sabotage missions against Lila; she simply tries to reconnect with her oldest friend, and hopes that he might see her for the girl who loves him now, not the one who broke his heart before.

Great information, and very easy to read

Great information, and very easy to read. Organization is a little lacking (dental information on horses is in about 3 different sections), but still not as bad as other textbooks I've read. I also have found quite a number of typos, especially in regards to picture captions and which picture they pertain to.

I have always felt it a shame that many young gymnasts in this country are unaware of our sport and its athletes. My belief is that to fully appreciate where we are, it's important to know whence we came. Women's Gymnastics a History is a remarkable compilation of statistics, photos and stories, combined in such a way as to really give us a feeling of how it used to be and who the people are who made gymnastics what it is today. As a gymnastics commentator, I'm sure it will be a great reference book.

Before the "Miller" was common on beam, and even before the uncommon Shannon Miller herself was on earth, generations of gymnasts sustained the sport beautifully through its evolution and controversies. Paying perfect homage to the legacies of past idols such as Vera Caslavska , Natalia Kuchinskaya and Olga Korbut is Minot Simons' Women's Gymnastics a History, (Volume I, 1966 to 1974). The 432 page hard cover chronicle "replete with 177 color and black and white photos, plus 84 diagrams, 82 routine descriptions, 22 updated biographies, and miscellaneous features and results" is perhaps the most staggeringly impressive account ever of arguably the sport's most glamorous era. Young readers can enjoy the dramatic photos (most splendid of which include the color shots of Kuchinskaya on p. 73 and p. 75) and concise yet insightful profiles. They can also marvel and even chuckle at the skills performed on "primitive" equipment - non-padded beams, plain floor exercise mats and bars that were set for hip beats.

Today's fans can also discover the accomplished pasts of women who continue to influence the sport. Current Canadian coach (and former Soviet Olympian) Elvira Saadi is featured on the front cover. Prominent international judges and former Olympians Lyubov Burda Andrianova (back cover), Joan Moore Gnat and Linda Metheny Mulvihill are also profiled between the covers.

A Masterpiece

Last I checked, website Grips Etc was still selling new copies of this book for $35. So before you drop $240+ on a used copy, I suggest you investigate that avenue.

Not quite a coffee table volume, but more than a mere history, this is easily the most comprehensive, thoroughly illustrated, and ambitious history of the sport I've ever encountered. With its play-by-play of every major gymnastics event, it threatens to be TOO detailed. But who can really complain, especially when there's so much interesting stuff on offer (particularly the fascinating "where are they now" interviews with the legends of the sport)? And it's all printed on glossy white paper. Classy.

Book has some drawbacks. There isn't an index, which is a sin considering there's 400 pages of detailed text to sort through. The prose is frustratingly passive in tone and, at times, chaotically arranged (quoting paragraphs-long passages from other sources really breaks the flow). This robs the book significantly of dramatic power. The photography is good, but not breathtaking, and most of the images are relatively small, which might frustrate fans seeking something more, er, coffee-tably. In other words, this is a history for fans of 1966-1974 gymnastics only--which must be a very small audience indeed.

But that small audience will be hugely impressed. You realize how special this book is when you consider how most gymnastics history books today are just heavily authorized biographies, "inspirational" works that, quite honestly, are very dull (the only really good reads lately have been those that criticize the sport--at least there's *drama* when things go horribly wrong). It amazes me that there is a void that has yet to be filled for a great illustrated history of gymnastics (even the International Gymnastics Federation has failed to address that, preferring to put out coffee table photo books that are frustratingly devoid of detail--more propaganda works peppered with inspirational writing than real histories).

So, this book stands alone. There's never been anything like it--making the fact that the sequels seem fated never to materialize all the sadder. The thing really is (almost) worth $240. But go to Grips Etc. first for your $35 copy anyway. ;-)

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!

For all you fans of women's gymnastics, this is the book you have been waiting for! It leaves no stone unturned in the gymnastics happenings between 1966-1974. We see the descriptions, both in word and in Code of Points illustrations, of the routines performed by famous gymnasts such as Caslavska, Tourisheva, Rigby, Korbut, Zuchold, Janz, and many others. The pictures are terrific! So are the bio's.
This book takes you back to the glory days when women's gymnastics was performed by WOMEN, not by anorexic teenaged dwarves. In fact, it inspired me to resume gymnastics after an 18-year hiautus!
I got in touch recently with Mr. Simons, the author, to order Volume II, but it has not yet been released. Please do so immediately, sir!! So many people are waiting eagerly for it!

For those who dispair that there are no books for the gymnastics fan written for an average age above 10, here is your book! I love the sport as a fan. Beyond back issues of gymnastics magazines, it is hard to find good information. This book is excellent! It describes in detail the competitions, routines, and competitors of its time. My only disappointment is that it ends in 1974, and I have yet to see Volume 2 hit the shelves. A great read!

GET TO KNOW THIS POET

Many Iranians regard Simin Behbahani as the Queen of Persian Poetry. And this book provides part of the proof that she desrves the title.
I first discovered Behbahani's work in the book " Wounded Rose" in which some of her poems were presented in English along with the works of two of her contemporaries: Yadollah Royai and Nader Naderpour.
In this collection we are treated to a larger selection of Ms. Behbahani's work.
Ms. Behbahani initially supported the seizure of power by the mullahs in 1979. But she was soon disappointed. She not only realised that the mullahs were enemies of Iranian culture, including Persian poetry, but learned a more important lesson: poets should not become involved in partisan politics of the day.
That change is reflected in the selection of her poets presented here.
I have noticed some important differences bewteen the two translations, in this book, and in " Wounded Rose". Here, teh translations are more literal and appear , at times at elast, rather crude.In " Wounded Rose" the translations, including one of Behbahani's sonnets by W.S. Merwin, are more literary and poetical.
But this, I suppose, is inevitable in any translation of poetry.

PERSIAN GHAZAL AT ITS BEST

Just a generation ago the Persian sonnet ( ghazal) was regarded as dead and buried as a poetic form. Now, and thanks to Simin Behbahani, the ghazal is not only alive but rejuvenated. Ms. Behbahani shows that the most modern themes could still be effectively and beautifully handled by a poetic form that dates back to almost 11 centuries ago, making " modern Persian" the oldest language of the world still in daily use. Ms. Behabahani was one of few poets of her generation who refused to fall for the fashionable forms of poetrty, mostly imported from France and propagated by public relations masters such as trhe late Ahmad Shamlou. She avoided vers libre and prose-poems and other gimmicks and concentrated on retooling the Persian classical prosody in the service of new needs and feelings. She has never looked back. Behbahani is one of the most significant poets writing in any language today. She deserves to be read and re-read. What we need is more translations of her work not only in English but also in other major languages. A READER IN ENGLAND

Complex and readable

There is no such thing as a perfect translation, and it often takes a combination of sources to get as close to the original as is possible. After working extensively with 5 translations of De Anima (alongside the Greek text), I found that a combination of this and the Sacks were of most help in coming to grips with this difficult work. In both cases, the translators are interested more in Aristotle for his own sake, as opposed to other approaches which see his work less as philosophical treasure than as merely a precursor, of historical interest and importance largely because of how later philosophers dealt with Aristotelianism.
