For the thinkers

Anyone who is willing to put all previous assumptions aside and objectively reconsider controversial subjects will most likely love this book. I greatly respect archaeology and the study of ancient place names--investigations that can become quite revealing. The ancients, like contemporary societies, renamed their new settlements with the names of previous hometowns when they relocated to other locations (such as New Hampshire, New England, Newcastle, Melbourne etc). Is it, therefore, not surprising that ancient (and modern) Israel would also have had previous locations named 'Jerusalem' etc? WHOOPS! I've opened up yet another can of worms! You're just going to have to read this book for yourself and, no, I do not have any other motive than to promote intellectual debate and objective thinking. LOL

There Is No Method for Perfect Pitch

I was really, really excited to get this book. I'm a guitarist with a master's degree in jazz and ear training has always been a huge part of my musicianship. I teach it at the college course level and always profess its importance to the well rounded musician. With perfect pitch being the natural phenomenon that it is, I was really interested in how the author was going to approach teaching it...and that ended up being the catch right there: having perfect pitch is referred to as a natural phenomenon for a reason...it exists naturally. You CANNOT teach perfect pitch. You CANNOT learn perfect pitch. However, you CAN learn relative pitch, and that's exactly what this book is aimed to help with. The author seems to be a guy who knows his stuff, and oddly enough, he very accurately explains the difference between relative and perfect pitch...then goes on to claim that his method will help you learn how to posses perfect pitch.

Unfortunately, the method used here is just really poor. To start, you're asked to listen to several audio tracks, each being a piano playing a single note over and over again several times. You're supposed to "digest" the note and describe its sound with a list of adjectives...and then do the same thing for every single other note. So the reader is expected to be able to listen to a note and hear qualities in it to the extent that they're able to distinguish it from any other note...when I went through the book and realized that this was the foundation of the author's method to obtain perfect pitch, I was so upset. Think about this...let's say you hear somebody sing a C natural and you describe it by saying something like "that note is round, hollow sounding, etc, etc, etc,"...then you hear that person sing a C#...are you going to hear a completely different set of qualities to describe it and distinguish it from the C natural? And then hear a different set of qualities for each of the remaining 10 notes? And then be able to instantly recall those same exact qualities for a given note every single time you heard it? Of course not! I love advanced ear training techniques as much as anybody, but aside from those gifted with perfect pitch, I just do not believe that readers will be able to distinguish one note from any other note by recalling a verbal description. And even so, if this were to somehow work, it isn't perfect pitch...it would be a form of relative pitch - you're naming the note based on having practiced how to relate it to certain qualities.

Bottom line: Perfect pitch cannot be taught through any kind of method, and this book is no exception. However, it does teach certain aspects of relative pitch and it has some good listening exercises. It covers how to hear and identify the 12 chromatic simple intervals, which is an essential skill for musicians. I would absolutely not recommend this book to advanced musicians with previous ear training experience.

If you really want to develope a great ear, this course is not for you.

No included instructions or dialog on the CD's, just tones played, I was really disappointed. I don't believe you should need a book with the answers for reference, you should be able to listen for the answers on the included CD's. The ear learns from listening, not reading. If you are serious about ear training I would purchase The Perfect Pitch Ear Training SuperCourse by David Lucas Burge. This ear training course consists of clear verbal instruction with musical examples that open the ear naturally. I am a serious musician that has chosen to expand my understanding of music and improve my ear, so I do not recommend the Hal Leonard Perfect Pitch Method.

Classical economics in an X-ray machine

After reading this book and absorbing the amazing content I can truly say this is one of the better economic books I've read. The author dives deep into the main topics that the Classical school wrote about and disects the main writers, Adam Smith and David Ricardo. But what I really enjoyed was the thoughts about the "2nd and 3rd" layers of writers in this space. The suggested readings at every chapter give you lots of great ideas about who to read next and I truly feel I understand the "Classical School of Economics" much more now.

This book and Raised Up have so profoundly assisted me in learning the daily cross Jesus told us to take up. And, as a result I am experiencing the resurrection power of the Most High daily as never before! This book has truly shined light on this foundational and essential Bible truth as none other I have ever read!

“Let go and let God” comes down to is this: We need to let go of our own will. We must claim as our own the incredibly hard prayer that Jesus prayed: “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42). We need to let go and let God do what God wills. This submission will lead to peace and joy, even when the way is difficult. “Father, I place my life in Your hands!” (Luke 23:46).” Carol Burke

This was a precious gift to me. When I started reading 'I Die Daily' it was very difficult to put this book down! I refer to 'I Die Daily' often as it is full of Scripture and truth. Brother Todd knows how to share wisdom and knowledge through his writings and the meaning of the Scripture. He is bold in telling the truth and sharing Yeshua's Word--which we don't see much of that today in the world of Christianity. A wonderful reference to add to your library. -Dar

Digital Photography: A Basic Manual I feel teaches more than the basics when it comes to the DSLR, DSLRs, or the hybrid cameras on the market. There were a few times I found myself having to go over chapters again to clarify things, not because the book is not well written, but because there are some aspects of digital photography that can be quite confusing. For example, when it comes to lenses and their focal, length, and angle of view of different lenses it can be quite time consuming if you would like to learn more than the basics. For me, these were some pages in the book I just could not quickly skim through without some confusion.

The introduction of this book has a Quick Start Guide which is helpful for those who have never used a digital camera before. From there you move on to Chapter 1: Digital Capture, which lists the different types of cameras available on the market. This part of the chapter then goes into more details on different types of cameras while covering some specifics of each type of camera. Then the main focus turns to the digital camera itself. Specifics then covered on the digital camera are the image sensor, pixels and image processor. You are also given basic information on setting up a digital camera and you are taught about file formats, image sizes, white balance and miscellaneous camera settings your camera may or may not have. It continues into memory cards, types and speed, and transfer rates. This section on memory cards I found interesting and helpful, especially the information about how memory cards come in different classes and how they are rated according to their speed, also called data transfer rate. All of which affects how fast a memory card can capture a picture or how fast the card can transfer photos to a computer. This chapter ends with miscellaneous camera capture equipment and trouble shooting.

Chapter 2: Camera Lenses, begins with information on the camera lens itself and its focus and auto-focus capabilities, including its reaction to low-light, reflective surfaces, snow, sand and sky, close-ups and the also the manual focus mode. This was another chapter that helped me by teaching me why my camera behaves the way it does when in auto-focus mode during certain times. This instilled in me more confidence now to switch to manual focus and use it more often when my needs are not met with auto-focus. In the next topic, Exposure, I learned about aperture, exposure, and f-stop. Here I learned the most commonly available f-stops which include whole f-stops, and full f-stops. It also goes into more complicated lens aperture changes, partial f-stop, half f-stop and third f-stop. One important aspect I learned here was that a lens is described (mm on a lens) according to its widest f-stop. This is the widest it can open, which explains why fast lenses are the most expensive lenses on the market due to their large aperture. Another thing to keep in mind is also the higher the number of your lens the smaller the lens opens. The chapter continues with disadvantages and advantages of different size lenses and with minimal instructions on setting f-stops due to the wide variations in cameras. The information after this point gets a little more complicated with the focal lengths and millimeter sizes of zoom lenses and prime lenses describing normal, wide angle and telephoto lenses and how an optical measurement of a focal length is determined.

These were only the first couple of chapters in this book, which should give you an idea that this book has a lot of information in it. The title can be misleading to one who thinks they know everything there is to know about photography, may have missed learning some basics along the way, or might need a refresher in some aspects of digital photography. Because of this I would recommend Digital Photography: A Basic Manual to anyone, whether you just received your first digital camera or you have had one for years and would like to improve your digital photo taking abilities. Overall, I enjoyed reviewing Digital Photography and learned many important aspects of that I benefited from and will help me be a better photographer.

Digital Photography is a wonderful way to get acquainted with your digital camera or if you plan on buying a new one, it will help you decide which is best for you. I plan on buying something more than the point and shoot that I currently own, so this book is very timely. It explains exactly what all those numbers mean and how to get the most of your camera even if it is a point and shoot, something a lot of photography books don't mention. It not only goes into detail about what settings to use on your point and shoot, but how to get the most out of it. The chapter on lighting is priceless since it will help you find the best angle and light direction to get the best picture even before you click on the shutter button.

Each chapter combines graphs, diagrams and photographs to help you figure out what to do in each situation to get the best picture. It is easy to follow and the steps are spelled out so easily that you can remember them when you don't have this guide to help you. If you plan on buying a camera or gifting one, get a copy of this book to go along with it since it will make that gift even more valuable.

Useful & Easy Information For Amateur Photographers

I love reading books about photography. As someone who still calls myself an amateur photographer even after three paid gigs and published photos I feel you can never know enough about taking pictures. I also like the basic approach. This book wasn't too far over my head and could be read and understood by the most amateurish of photographers. What I liked the most was the real "english" way the author tells us how to use your camera. Also, he reiterates something I have been telling people forever, a camera doesn't take a photo, a person does. With the right skills, you can take a great picture with any camera. Loved the section on F stops (still working on those) and the section on lightening. Great resource for photographers and amateur photographers.

A good geoscience textbook for understanding the vadose zone

I have used Dan Stephens' book as a textbook in a graduate-level Geology class on the vadose zone. It was ideal. A lot of unsaturated zone books have been published in the last several years, but none of the others was suitable for my purposes. Dan is an engaging speaker and teacher with lots of real-world experience, both as a teacher/researcher at New Mexico Tech and as an environmental consultant specializing in vadose zone problems. His experience comes across in this book, as does his personable way of presenting the information. Yes, there are equations. But this is not a soil physics textbook as much as it is a geosciences perspective on the vadose zone. This perspective is based on his extensive experience in arid and semi-arid settings, but some of his comments shed light on vadose zone processes in more humid climates. I should add that his treatment of this dry subject is not "dry", and relatively easy to read given the textbook breadth of material covered. Each paragraph could be expanded into a separate dissertation. Stephens has condensed a wealth of material, both practical and theoretical. I recommend it.
