Amanat Chaudhry is President and Engineering Manager with Advanced Twpsom Petroleum Systems, Inc. in Houston, Texas. He founded Twpsom in 1995. The company is involved in the development of PC-based well simulation and management software support models and programs in reservoir and production engineering. He has more than 20 years of international and domestic experience in reservoir engineering reservoir simulation development and applications, well testing, water flooding, EOR techniques, reservoir studies and operations. Mr. Chaudhry formally worked as a Senior Reservoir Engineering Advisor an Senior Staff Reservoir Engineer of Pertamina, the state Owned Oil Company of Indonesia. He also worked as Senior Reservoir Engineer with Core Lab Inc. - now Western Atlas in Reservoir Simulation Application Group in Dallas. He has started his career in the oil industry with Reservoir PVT & EOR Lab Inc. (subsidiaries of Core Lab Inc.) in Houston, Texas, as a Research Associate. Her holds MS degrees in Petroleum Engineering and Chemical Engineering both from the University of Pittsburgh, PA.

Best book for Reservoir Engineers

This book is very well written and would be a very useful on the shelf of Reservoir engineers who want to have quick look at the methods to do well tests on the available well pressure data. I found the explanations for the tests to be short, but then they are precise! You can use them to understand the subject pretty easily if you have a basic understanding.

I'd not recommend this for a novice. You should have knowledge of reservoir engineering subject and maths (differential equations) if you want to purchase this book and use it. It is on the expensive side too.

As for myself, i'd use this book as an when required as its difficult to remember all the tests and how they should be used (i'd not use the calculations myself - but its good to have).

A nice purchase personally.

What Else Could We Expect From a Book Published in 1983...?

* Spoiler Alert* Corporate raider, Rafe Santine ('Santine')came up from a bad situation to become the 'satorial[ly] elegan[t]' man he is today: Born a bastard (today, I think we would say 'illegitimate'), abandoned by a mother with more important things on her mind than raising her son into a man, Santine had little more than the foster system and his own drive and God-given ingenuity to serve as his foundation. At sixteen, Santine began working at the construction company that would be the first company he would own-and all by the age of twenty three! And so, when game warden and curator of a wild-animal reserve near Sandiego, Janna Cannon makes her fateful entrée into his life, while he may have developed into a `legend[ary]' and `self-made billionaire wielding more power than many heads of state', Santine is noticeably less developed in the emotional department; The male lead of THE LADY AND THE UNICORN often acts the part of a spoiled and petulant child-thinking everything should be his way all the time. A supreme narcissist, readers will agree that is about time Santine had a reason to think about someone other than himself. Janna is supposed to be that reason.

Johansen wants the reader to accept that Janna's need to save some of the endangered species and other wild animals would make her willing to accept an indecent proposal from a giant of a man with harsh, rugged features, who cool as a cucumber proclaims that he'd like to keep her as a pet: "I said that I'd never had a pet. Well I've decided to acquire one for the next month or so. My own wild thing to keep me amused until I can return to San Franci[s]co." A bargain is struck-a grant of Santine's land in return for Janna's cooperation. And so, using this rather unbelievable and yet interesting device, Johansen's contrivance keeps the leads together and a romance...of sorts...is set to unravel.

The story is really a play on Beauty and the Beast to this reviewer's mind. The 1983 setting allows for a hero that is more dominant and cavalier with the heroine's needs than is popularly described today. Accordingly, the heroine accepts this rough treatment with eternal serenity and grace-also unlikely to see a female lead written this way today. Also, there are a few uncomfortable moments, such as when Santine declares: `I've been on the verge of raping you since I looked up and saw you shimmering in the lamplight like a sexy ghost' and his determination to call Janna an `earth mother' in several (maybe all) of the love scenes or `Pocahontas' because of her Native American heritage.... If you can get past the fact that THE LADY AND THE UNICORN is NOT politically correct, then you'll be okay. And Santine's revelation regarding the meaning of the title alone is worth reading THE LADY AND THE UNICORN.

A captivating story full of Johansen quality romance.

This is a wonderful romance, with a strong heroine. Janna Cannon would do whatever it takes to ensure Rafe Santine donated a huge chunk of land to her wildlife refuge for endangered animals. Santine's price: for Janna to become his "pet". A great romance about how only by letting a wild thing free can one ever truly own it. I love all of Iris Johansen's romances, but this one is one of my personal favorites.

Beautiful tale that is definitely a "keeper"!

She has high demands of him, but Rafe has even greater demands of her. He knows instantly that he must possess every facet of the enigmatic Janna. But the only thing she'll give him is her body--and for the first time in his life, that is not enough for Rafe.
Janna Cannon is willing to risk it all to save the endangered animals of the wild animal reserve where she works as a game warden. With the land they depend on pulled out from under them, Janna must take a gambit to convince billionaire Santine to give the reserve the real estate they need to keep the animals free. And she'll need to sneak onto the man's vast, highly protected property to do it. Much to her surprise, Santine agrees to grant her the land--if Janna agrees to give him herself in exchange. And what begins as luxurious captivity soon turns into an emotional awakening she never expected.

Thoughts: This is a reprint of one of Iris Johansen's books that she wrote for the classic Loveswept series in 1983. I actually read this book many years ago, but it was really nice to re-visit this book! Iris Johansen was actually my favorite author until she started delving more into the mystery/thriller genre rather than the romance novels I am familiar with from her. While I understand her wanting to branch out as an author, I miss her romances something fierce!! Her older books are favorites of mine that I revisit frequently, though it has been awhile since I read this particular one.

In this book, we have billionaire Rafe Santine, who is growing bored during his forced recuperation after an illness. When a lovely intruder finds her way past the walls to his castle - and casts a spell over his guard dogs - he thinks he might have just found something to relieve his boredom. But in the lovely Janna, he may have bit off more than he can chew.

Janna Cannon is passionate about the protection of wildlife - particularly that of endangered animals - and she has come to plead with Rafe to grant them the two million dollar land for a wild animal preserve. But when she's forced to remain on Rafe's estate for two months in exchange, will she find herself losing her heart in the process?

Keep in mind when you are reading these novels, how much the romance genre has changed over the years. Again, this book was written in 1983, so if you haven't read a lot of the classic romance novels from the 80's or from previous years, you might react to the characters and/or the story a little differently. Rafe may come off as a bit dominant and callous compared to today's typical male leads, and Janna is so passive and accepting - and even serene - in the face of this treatment that at times it can seem a bit unrealistic. There are also a few things said throughout the book that are not exactly politically and culturally correct today. (One example, is Rafe referring to her as 'Pocahontas' because of her Native American heritage) But if you can keep in mind when this book was released, and overlook a few things like that, it really is a great read.

Yet, in some ways this book is also a little before it's time - I particularly liked when Janna took Rafe off guard by referring to sex a nothing but a 'biological coupling' - which was a pretty modern view to take back then. And it incenses him to no end throughout the book that she might feel that way about ther lovemaking. And while Rafe is gruff on the exterior, he becomes soft, sweet, and sentimental with Janna - once she 'tames the beast'. The lengths he goes through to keep her with him, and the soft side he displays that is such a contradiction to his character that it had my heart skipping a beat in numerous places throughout the novel. And Janna, while she may seem passive compared to today's heroines, manages to not fall completely under his thumb. She finds small ways in which to show her rebellious streak. And the fact that Rafe realizes that he must soften and change is really quite endearing.

While this book is not my favorite of hers, it does come in somewhere in the top. In my opinion, Johansen is one of the most romantic writers I have ever read. I love her stories from Loveswept! Her books always wring such emotions from me. I love seeing such strong male characters ultimately fall apart at the feet of the women that they love in order to win them forever. Beautiful tale that is definitely a "keeper"!

Pretty good--but be careful

The book was very informative and easy reading. Considering the depth of psychological issues, Faw did a great job. There were some ways in which I thought the author was a little bit too accepting of certain things, such as hypnosis. (He did, to his credit, say that he does not claim to be right on everything, but is merely suggesting possibilities to be considered.) Although I disagree with him in some areas, I appreciate Faw's willingness to put aside prejudices and look objectively at the issues. I definitely do not recommend this book for anyone who believes things because they read them and doesn't think for themself. However, if you can think for yourself, this book will give you some great things to think about.

A CHALLENGE TO RETHINK CHRISTIANITY AND PSYCHOLOGY

At the time this book was published in 1995, Harold Faw was associate professor of psychology and head of the psychology department at Trinity Western University, in British Columbia. He explained in the Preface, "I have one major purpose in writing [this book]: to stimulate you to think about the relationship between your Christian faith and contemporary psychology... I hope that each of you will experience a growing appreciation for and commitment to both God's Word and the field of psychology." (Pg. 9)

He notes, "According to James Beck and James Banks, there are three distinct views about the place that psychology should occupy in the life and thought of the evangelical Christian community. One group of Christians welcomes psychology, incorporating its concepts freely into both understanding and practice and attempting to equate theological and psychological concepts wherever possible... A second group of believers is wary of psychology and often strongly critical of it. These believers regard it as a threat to the purity of true Christian faith and as a movement that directly competes with an orthodox biblical position... A third group of Christians holds a more central position. For them, psychology is a source of useful insight, but one that ... must be carefully evaluated in light of biblical teaching." (Pg. 15-16)

He admits, "in the realm of our present experience, the Bible leaves a great deal unsaid. For example, it does not address in any direct way the question of whether children experiencing severe abuse should be removed from their natural families. Instead, it provides the large framework of respect and love for all persons within which this and many other specific issues needs to be considered." (Pg. 19)

He asks, "Why are some Christians more willing than others to implement physical interventions through chemicals or brain surgery? I suspect that most of us would consider surgical or chemical treatments if we were desperate and were convinced that counseling and providing loving support no longer held any hope of providing relief in a crisis. But wide disparity would be evident as different people decided whether such a point had been reached." (Pg. 33) He also suggests, "there is a legitimate place for behavioral techniques, provided they are used to encourage appropriate actions that honor God. However, we should remember that our dependency is ultimately on God. Behavior modification must be regarded as a temporary bridge over a particular hurdle. The bridge should be dismantled as soon as possible to guard against dependency on inferior sources of aid." (Pg. 78)

He notes that "A further concern with the concept of self-esteem in the light of biblical truth centers on the sin of pride. Arrogance and pride are condemned in Scripture... as something God hates. We are warned as well that pride leades to personal disaster... In addition, a spirit of humility is consistently affirmed... If a positive self-concept is linked with pride and incompatible with humility, it clearly has no place in the life of a disciple of Christ." (Pg. 134)

Jack Godwin, PhD, is a political scientist whose influence spans the political spectrum. Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta called Clintonomics, his previous book, "a must read," an assessment seconded by conservative Newsmax.com publisher Christopher Ruddy. Godwin began his career as a Peace Corps volunteer in Gabon, West Africa. He has a doctorate from the University of Hawaii and degrees from San Francisco State University and the University of California-Berkeley. He is a four-time Fulbright scholar and a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy. In The Office Politics Handbook, he draws from his personal experience in business and government and his repertoire of anecdotes and archetypes from history, literature, and film to entertain and educate readers about interpersonal relationships, politics, and leadership. He lives in Sacramento, California.

How to survive and then thrive by effectively managing micropolitics in the contemporary workplace

As I began to read this book, I was reminded of another, Jeff Pfeffer's Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don't. For those who have not as yet read it, he observes, "Over the years, I've learned a great deal about power and will now share with you what I hope you will find most interesting and, more to the point, most useful." In the Introduction, for example, he suggests that having power is related to living a longer and healthier life, that power and the visibility and stature that accompany them can produce wealth, and that power is part of leadership and necessary to get things done, whatever the nature and extent of the given objectives may be. "Power is desirable to many, albeit not all, people, for what it can provide and also a goal in and of itself."

Although Pfeffer does not invoke the core metaphor from Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" in The Republic, I think it is especially relevant to the various misconceptions about power that Pfeffer refutes. The situation in Plato's allegory is that people are located in a darkened cave watching shadows dance on a wall. (The source of light is outside the cave.) They think they are watching ultimate realities. Rather, what they observe are images, yes, but also distortions. The same is true of the "just world hypothesis" that the world is predictable, comprehensible, and therefore potentially controllable. Worse yet, it implies that "people get what they deserve; that is, that the good people are likely to be rewarded and the bad to be punished. Most important," Pfeffer adds, "the phenomenon works in reverse: if someone is seen to prosper, there is a social psychological tendency for observers to decide that the lucky person must have done something to deserve his good fortune."

I mention all this to frame my thoughts about Jack Godwin's "handbook," written for those who want to "win the game of power and politics at work." The information, insights, and counsel he provides -- in my opinion -- tend to be less theoretical, more practical than Pfeffer's but both are convinced -- and I agree -- that unless and until a person has sufficient self-control (i.e. power) and understands certain realities however painful they may be, that person is highly vulnerable to being controlled by others. Stated another way, without self-mastery, people can become enslaved (as Ernest Becker suggests in Denial of Death) to fulfilling others' expectations of them.

As a political scientist, Godwin has an insatiable curiosity to understand what works and what doesn't work during sociopolitical interaction...also why. In 1867, Otto Von Bismarck suggested, "Politics is the art of the possible." Godwin would add that politics can also be viewed as a "game" with competitors, rules, and rewards. He would also add that it usually has some scientific elements -- discussed in his book -- that can have decisive impact on the process of competition.

I was especially interested in sharing Godwin's thoughts about what he characterizes as "the gods of micropolitics," those eight political archetypes that personify "the constituent elements of the [begin italics] anthropo politicus [end italics]," the so-called political animal. Accompanied by my comments, they are:

o The Servant Leader (Pages 132-141)
Comment: Leads by example, earns respect and trust of followers; views leadership as a privilege.

o The Rebel (142-148)
Comment: Often the "devil's advocate" to any proposed idea or initiative; allergic to status quo.

o The Mentor (148-156)
Comment: Loves to learn and then share knowledge with others; influences with wisdom and sound judgment.

o The Recluse (156-162)
Comment: May often be a principled introvert rather than anti-social; definitely anti-political.

o The Judo Master (162-169)
Comment: Has mastered leverage to exploit weakness or vulnerability; highly resilient and dexterous.

o The Resister (169-174)
Comment: Also principled and conscience-driven; agreement and compliance must be earned rather than forced.

o The Opportunist (175-182)
Comment: Very alert to others' weaknesses and vulnerabilities; master of timing and exploitation.

o The Survivor (182-188)
Comment: No matter what happens to and/or around this person, this "god" or "goddess" of micropolitics will sustain loyalty and commitment.

However named, these are indeed familiar types within a workforce environment. There are important lessons to be learned from each and Godwin suggests several. It should be noted that the most effective office politicians demonstrate some of the defining characteristics of several different archetypes. Also, I agree with Godwin that "micropolitics is a combination of one-time calculation and general pattern recognition."

In a workplace as well as in a school or on a school playground, bullying generates a variety of responses from those who observe it. Here's what Jack Godwin suggests: "First, model the virtues you would have others emulate, especially emotional self-control and professional detachment, which will help you avoid excessive use of force. Second, talk about bullying and encourage others to do so. We need to create [and then sustain] a culture in which people (at least) aren't afraid to talk about bullying. Finally, when you see it, stop it. Don't assume someone else will stop it. Make it your duty. Stand up and say [begin italics] that's enough [end italics]. Repeat after me: [begin italics] That's far enough [end italics]."
