Not since reading the book How To Win Friends And Influence People have I seen such a quintessential addition to my self help !
    By Bibliophile
Not since reading the book How To Win Friends And Influence People have I seen such a quintessential addition to my self help library. Given the violence and bullying we see today in schools I think this book should be required reading for all high school kids along with Dale Carnegie's. I wouldn't just recommend it to high school students though, considering I have met a lot of adults that could use this.... including myself!

I have read other reviews that said this is common knowledge... and I suspect that person only read part one. Part one discusses why we need to be social, what social skills are and what the causes for poor social skills are. And yes, most of this part IS common knowledge... but it is necessary to include. Not all people know this stuff... as weird as that may sound... (those might be the people I will go out and buy this book on audio for!)... so it's absolutely imperative to include it... and it only makes this book even better as far as I am concerned. I think the author does a really awesome job of laying out the book, it takes you from A - Z in learning about Social Skills.

After Part one he goes into developing social skills for children to adults, social skills for work, every day life and in your relationships.

What I found was interesting is it made me realize that sometimes I may be being perceived the wrong way, which is causing unintentional stress in my relationship... all because of the way I come across when I am in pain, then they react to what they perceive is an attitude from me, and the ball is rolling.... all social skills. By saying first off ... "I am in pain, so I am so sorry if I come across as bitchy" ... I have eliminated all the fighting in my house.

This book is a lot more than just that.... this is just what I got out of it on my first read. And yes, I said first read... because like How to win friends and influence people... this is a book I need to get a hard copy of and reread over and over again. It's like a vaccination for your brain, heart and soul... you just gotta read books like this one every now and then to put life into perspective.

I would recommend this book to anyone and I already am!

    Highly Recommended Book!
    By Kindle Customer
I have gotten this book as a gift from a friend because I am communications major in college. Here is my review:

I have recently started teaching classes in my profession. I have always loved teaching, but I found myself struggling to explain myself and get my message across to a more diverse crowd. I found myself stressed and always having to take longer to get some of the students to understand, thus taking up a lot of class time.
I am an American of Mexican and Polish descent and have always worked with people who speak mainly English. I went to a colleague and asked them their advice regarding why I am having this kind of trouble. I was told this: “You have to diversify your dialogue and mannerisms by learning the proper social skills that are practiced in Latin nations. So, I went looking for a book that would seem to speak to the Latin community regarding social skills.
I found this book, Habilidades Sociales, and went into it looking to see what communication skills I do possess and what communication skills I do not have. I am looking to learn what methods I am currently using as well as what I need to learn so I can communicate effectively with my students.
As an educator, I feel it is important to teach about something that has benefitted me. So, what I will do is highlight the things I have learned from this book without giving the whole thing away. If you like the book, I highly suggest you buy this if you find that you are missing pieces of effective social skills.
    I have learned the following:
    - We use social skills in every aspect of our lives. There are also health benefits of good social skills.
    - Social media has affected how we socialize, sometimes in negative ways.
    - HOW DIVERSITY CHANGES OUR SOCIAL INTERACTIONS. This is the reason why I purchased this book.
    - There are different types of social skills that I use, professional and casual, as well as when to use each one.
    - I learned what social habits really are.
    - I learned about listening.
    - I learned proper body language to use as well as how my eyes tell my story.
    - Our social skills do affect how we do academically.
    - The thought process is very important.
    - Negative effects of bad social skills.
    - I have learned about Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, conditions that affect social skills and causes communication difficulty. I learned very much about Autism in this book and it helped me understand an Autistic family member so much more. This book spends a lot of time addressing these topics.
    - How social skills are developed from childhood until adolescence.
    - I have learned so much about how young adults communicate.
    - Development of adult social skills. It is good to know that we are never too old to learn good social skills.
    - I learned to be more socially savvy and how to put these things into their correct perspective.
I have taken a lot of notes and will be using them when I address my class about how I can communicate more effectively with them. I can not be afraid to learn new skills even at my more advanced age.
The last part of the book brings everything together and teaches how to apply these social skills. I have started implementing them while paying attention to my own social interactions. I am doing well, but I am not very good at listening when times get tough. I found myself cutting people off when I wanted to get my point across and need to work on that.
Finally, I think that this book should be part of any college curriculum because it can be the difference between passing and failing. We are all students, but we really have to be effective as students with our social interactions and understanding of different cultures. I highly recommend this book to anyone, particularly anyone who works with a diverse public.

Outstanding explanation of social skills and how to develop them
    By Jeff B
“Social Skills: The Modern Skill for Success, Fun, and Happiness Out of Life” is a highly informative book on something that seems to be falling out of fashion: social skills. Everywhere we look in society, we see a lack of social skills that used to be the norm, but is now the exception to the rule. If you don’t think your own social skills are lacking, you probably need this book!

Gabriel Angelo does a fine job of laying out the book, with chapters ranging from understanding what social skills are and why they’re important to how we develop social skills. The book explains social skill development in children and teens, as well as adults, in excellent detail. Angelo’s helpful tips also give advice on different applications of social skills, such as in the workplace and in everyday life.

I found the book useful in helping me understand why my own social skills sometimes seemed lacking. I was able to identify the things I was doing that were social faux pas, and have begun working to change those problems. Angelo’s writing and descriptions have helped me to be more considerate of others, which has improved my ability to build relationships with clients as well as my friends and family.

Essential Latin Vocabulary: The 1,425 Most Common Words Occurring in the Actual Writings of over 200 Latin Authors, by Mark A. E. Williams

This book is designed to help beginning and intermediate students master the vocabulary necessary to read real Latin with fluency and comprehension. It also serves as a resource for instructors and tutors. The text presents 1,425 words that allow a student to comprehend about 95 percent of all the vocabulary they will ever see in an actual Latin text. The terms found in the present book have been culled from statistical analyses of the works of more than two hundred authors in order to identify the core vocabulary. Were students to start out by learning the 25 most common words on this list, an astonishing 29 percent of all the vocabulary ever needed would be at their command. If a student masters the 300 most frequent words in this list, well over half of all the vocabulary necessary for fluent reading will be theirs. The goal of the book is to provide the student with the most efficient way to learn vocabulary. Chapters 1 and 2, in particular, are designed for drill, review, and study. The first chapter draws together all words that share the same grammatical classification. For example, all third declension neuter nouns are brought together in one place, with their definitions. By listing the vocabulary in grammatical groups, all the words that share a set of endings are assembled for the student: vocabulary and endings thus reinforce each other. Furthermore, each list of terms is broken down into groups of five words for ease in drawing up vocabulary lists to work with. Within the grammatical lists, each part of speech is preceded by an account of how the terms within are distributed. A student thus quickly learns that while there are 413 verbs that need to be mastered, well over one-third of these (157) are found in the third conjugation, while only about one per-cent (21) will be found in the fourth conjugation. With such information, independent students or instructors can prioritize their study and assignments more appropriately. In the second chapter, large parts of the vocabulary, with their attendant definitions, are regrouped by topics. A student who wishes, therefore, to focus on nature, human emotions, or military issues, will find such vocabulary conveniently grouped together. Chapter three lists the vocabulary terms from the most frequently occurring words to the least frequent. Students or instructors who wish to lean more heavily on the most (or least!) frequently occurring terms within their drills and studies can thus consult this frequency list. After the frequency list, the fourth chapter presents an alphabetical index of the terms. Two final chapters close the text. The first is a list of endings and paradigms for nouns, adjectives and verbs. Complete paradigms and endings are given for review. The final chapter provides the student with an additional one hundred words that are uniquely common in the Latin of the Middle Ages. These one hundred words, if added to the mix, would give the student a Mediaeval vocabulary that would match the efficiency of the Classical vocabulary that is the main focus of the book. For the effort of learning an additional one hundred words, another 1,000 years of Latin texts open up before the student. As a whole, then, this book offers the vocabulary that forms the core of one thousand seven hundred years of Latin literature. If the goal is to learn to read Latin with joy and ease, then the vocabulary terms in this book are one of the major keys to success. By learning these terms, a student’s vocabulary should be ready to tackle the Latin of any era from the Classical period to the Renaissance.

    Exactly right, Extremely helpful!
    By Hypatia
First of all, no book will teach you vocabulary unless you are willing to sit down and do the work and the coverup exercises and the basic drills. But if you are willing to put in the work, this is the book to learn real vocabulary from.

I have to say, it is the kind of book you *grow* to really love. At first it's fine but the more you work with it, the more you figure out how it all fits together and you start to "get" how the different lists work with each other. Then it really hits you how powerful a tool the thing is. The best part, I think, is the way the words are grouped up grammatically. In other words, all the words that you are going to want that have a second declension masculine set of endings are all placed right there together in one spot, and you can knock out every one of them while refreshing your drills on the endings too. And every noun and adjective and verb is grouped up that way. Perfect!

A couple of caveats: I found the topical lists to be less interesting, but that's really just a personal preference I suppose. Others may love it. I just didn't. The grammatical summary (really just the endings and a bit of commentary) was mostly brilliant for review, but sometimes it was too much information and other times I would have liked a little more. But again, that's probably just a matter of where you are in your own studies, I guess. I'm reviewing after a time away so what I need depends on what I've forgotten and what I am remembering, really. By the way, the book I have has grey shading instead of the yellow highlighting you see on the amazon site. I would have preferred the yellow, perhaps; it looks a bit cheerier. But the grey is fine and life goes on.

Finally, though, there are the prepositions. Those really are a place where I think less would have been more. They either need a simpler set of definitions or they need longer explanations to distinguish the shades of meaning a bit more.

I don't mean to be too particular, but the prepositions were frustrating in that way. If I could give it 4.75 stars, I would. Still, the thing is first rate. If you are willing to do the work, this book will be a good friend in your studies.

    Very Helpful for Teaching
    By Iunipera
When I ordered this book I was wondering why I was. The "1400" list, known to Latin teachers because it is the 1400 most frequent words in Latin is available throughout the internet for free.

What makes this worth the purchase is the further classifications of words that Williams does. The traditional grammar-oriented lists (1st declension, 2nd declension etc) exist but also topical lists such as feelings, body, texture and density, etc which makes writing my own stories for TPRS and comprehensible input easier. I will use it to also emphasize words in our Latin textbook that are the most important.

One thing I appreciate is the proofreading. While I am sure computer logarithms were used in determining these 1425 words, no weird errors appear. I once bought a "Most common words in Vergil" app which suggested suo, suere to sew was one of the most common verbs in Verbs. No. Aeneas doesn't smock. This book, gratefully, has been vetted by a conscientious teacher and many peers who cared about the accuracy. I have not found a single macron out of place.

A language is words, dear reader.
    By F. O'Neill
Languages consist of words. Even if you have a fair scheme of the grammar (certainly imperative in Latin) if you do not know the words, you may as well have had your tongue cut out.
There is a secret here. The core vocabulary even of great languages is not all that big (which is why teenagers can exist). Consider English: 'haruspicate,' 'newel post,' and 'pastern' are perfetly good English words, present in dictionaries. If you are not a vet. or a house-carpenter how ofen do you use them? Once in five years? Never? Now consider 'revere,' 'invest.' This book has discovered--one would think by computers, but the foundation work was done in 1939--that 85% of the vocabulary of 200 classic Roman writers consists of 1325 words (another hundred or so are added separately for Medieval writers--whom this book quite rightly takes seriously). This can easily be learned by any studious person.
It gets better. Many of these words have English descendants and are very easily learned. Many other are compounds of other words and so have identical grammar (this book, quite rightly, makes you learn the declensions of nouns and adjectives and the conjugations of verbs).
It is very well organized. The words are first presented by class (noun, verb, adverb) then, again, by context (war, religion and the gods, law and society, etc.). There is a section in which words are presented precisely by frequency of use (the most common word in Latin is 'qui (quae, quod).'
There is also a back section of digest grammar and grammatical paradigms. If you start to study Latin youi will find your living room littered with these, for most books supply them. But these are beautifully clear and admirably set forth. These alone are worth most of the price of the book. I agree with another reviewer that the prepositions are a nightmare--but that's the Romans, I think, not this book.
The book is extremely generous in second and alternate meanings of words. This, as you advance in Latin, is essential. The full vocabulary of Latin, as of Italian, is not vast; like Italian it solves this by attaching a great many meanings to many words. This, most especially in poetry, is a waiting trap. The word that supplies our "petition" is "peto--ere" often "ask for" or "seek." So, a sentence, "Germanun petivit, et corpus in silvam proiecit." "He asked the German, and threw the body in wood." What? Well, no. It turns out the first meaning of "peto"--nothing to do witih "petition"--is "to fall upon, attack." If you thoroughly read "Essential Vocabulary" you woiuld know this. Tricksy it is, very tricksy.
If you are learning Latin in or out of class, get this book! It's that simple. It will make every exposure to Latin text vastly more secure, hugely more enjoyable. This book is a treasure. It is incredibly worth the price.

    In-depth, step-by-step study
    By C Byrd
A nice addition to her standard studies! I am enjoying this in-depth, slow, and intentional look at Ecclesiastes. I do wish it would have gone through more proofreading to catch grammatical errors, and that the space allotted for recording answers was based on the question itself rather than being standard throughout, but these are obviously small things compared to the value of soaking in the message of this book of the Bible. Thanks to Courtney and her mom for the time invested!

I can wholeheartedly recommend this excellent study. It is well researched, well written, and purely based on Scripture. It is a short study, requiring about 15-20 minutes per day, but surprisingly deep. I enjoyed it very much and will not hesitate to purchase Courtney's next study.

The Pseudoscience Wars: Immanuel Velikovsky and the Birth of the Modern Fringe, by Michael D. Gordin

Properly analyzed, the collective mythological and religious writings of humanity reveal that around 1500 BC, a comet swept perilously close to Earth, triggering widespread natural disasters and threatening the destruction of all life before settling into solar orbit as Venus, our nearest planetary neighbor. Sound implausible? Well, from 1950 until the late 1970s, a huge number of people begged to differ, as they devoured Immanuel Velikovsky’s major best-seller, Worlds in Collision, insisting that perhaps this polymathic thinker held the key to a new science and a new history. Scientists, on the other hand, assaulted Velikovsky’s book, his followers, and his press mercilessly from the get-go. In The Pseudoscience Wars, Michael D. Gordin resurrects the largely forgotten figure of Velikovsky and uses his strange career and surprisingly influential writings to explore the changing definitions of the line that separates legitimate scientific inquiry from what is deemed bunk, and to show how vital this question remains to us today. Drawing on a wealth of previously unpublished material from Velikovsky’s personal archives, Gordin presents a behind-the-scenes history of the writer’s career, from his initial burst of success through his growing influence on the counterculture, heated public battles with such luminaries as Carl Sagan, and eventual eclipse. Along the way, he offers fascinating glimpses into the histories and effects of other fringe doctrines, including creationism, Lysenkoism, parapsychology, and more—all of which have surprising connections to Velikovsky’s theories. Science today is hardly universally secure, and scientists seem themselves beset by critics, denialists, and those they label “pseudoscientists”—as seen all too clearly in battles over evolution and climate change. The Pseudoscience Wars simultaneously reveals the surprising Cold War roots of our contemporary dilemma and points readers to a different approach to drawing the line between knowledge and nonsense.

    Review
"What is the difference between science and pseudoscience? As the publisher of Skeptic magazine and the 'Skeptic columnist for Scientific American I am frequently asked this question. Believe it or not, it'a a hard question to answer. Michael Gordin's The Pseudoscience Wars is the best single volume I have come across in my vast reading on the topic. He clearly and succinctly captures all sides on the debate, is rigorous in his research and fair to both believers and skeptics, and his narrative reconstruction of the Velikovsky affair makes for gripping reading. The Pseudoscience Wars is destined to become a classic in science literature."

(Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptic magazine, monthly columnist for Scientific American , author of The Believing Brain)

“Few issues loom more important today than the boundaries and authority of scientific expertise. How do the boundaries get created and reinforced, and what work do terms like ‘pseudoscience’ do in the debates? By delving deep into one of the earliest border skirmishes of the modern age—the fascinating, beguiling case of Immanuel Velikovsky, his heterodox theories of human history and cosmic evolution, and the firestorm of protest they elicited from the scientific community—Michael Gordin offers us a roadmap of the modern fringe. Scouring extraordinary sources with his keen analytic eye, Gordin reveals the roots of today's pseudoscience wars. Engrossing and illuminating.”

(David Kaiser, author of How the Hippies Saved Physics: Science, Counterculture, and the Quantum Revival)

"Gordin . . . is remarkably evenhanded. . . . This won't put an end to the debates that rage between legitimate scientific research and other fringe doctrines, but it does lay the Velikovsky affair to rest with fairness and clarity and will help to put into perspective many of the controversies swirling around today's scientific landscape. A good read for those interested in the history of science or pseudoscientific theories."

    (Library Journal)

“Those who are interested in how bad ideas start, how they diffuse, how they covet and resist confrontation, and how they wax and wane in popularity over time will find much food for thought in this gripping book.”

    (Science)

"Scholarly and highly readable.  . . . Gordin's historical analysis of pseudoscience remains disturbingly relevant." (Nature)

"A slyly funny writer. . . . Make no mistake: Gordin's sympathies are not with the occult. His fascination with pseudoscience is more like a negative method: the experts define the boundaries of their domain by fending off the quacks. For Gordin, pseudoscience is an instrument by which he takes the temperature of the past. . . . . The Pseudoscience Wars is a relatively slim volume, but Gordin siphons into it an overwhelming amount of information." (New Republic)

Important book putting the affair into a cultural perspective
    By J. Hundley
Not unlike a couple of others here, I came into this book, based upon the title and subtitle, expecting something a bit different. What I got is soemthing better. This is not a rehash of Velikovsky's ideas and the debunking or promotion of them, but rather a serious, widely-researched attempt to place the whole "Velikovsky Affair" into an historical and social perspective.

Expressing no overt opinion of IV's ideas or the speculations behind them, Gordin instead places them in their contemporary setting and examines how and why they provoked the types of responses they did. He presents only a thumbnail biographical sketch of IV, focusing on his background and the events of his life only as they pertain to the development of his ideas and how they color his (IV's) reactions to the reactions his books produced. He then follows how those reactions changed over time, both within and without established, academic science and the larger world.

Gordin uses Velikovsky as a template of a sort for the reception of, and reaction to, other ideas and ideologies that have arisen in the past 60 or so years and shows how Velikovsky's supporters and critics have influenced the examination of those other ideas. This is really a fascinating read.

And it is also a very good read. Gordin's writing is scholarly without being at all obscure and his straightforward, matter-of-fact prose serves his purpose here very well. His subject is interesting and engaging; his style doesn't have to be.

This is, I think, an important book for those interested in the history and culture of science in specific, and ideas in general, particularly in the ways that serious academics act and react to popular and populist ideas that claim to contradict or attack their work. Highly recommended here.

    Velikovsky: Scientist or fantasist?
    By SInohey
This is one of a few books that give Velikovsky a fair shake. Although not a supporter of Velikovsky's theories, Professor Gordin treats his subject with the evenhanded analysis of a dispassionate science historian. The out-of-this-world (literally and figuratively) theories of Velikovsky - about the cosmos, formation of the planet, electromagnetic celestial mechanics and the effects of planetary genesis and orbits on human history, as described in many various ancient myths - are expressed in the book without derisive criticism.
Immanuel Velikovsky (1895-1979) was a Russian born Jewish psychiatrist who established a practice of psychiatry and Freudian psychoanalysis in Palestine from 1924 to 1939. He published several papers in medical journals, in which he was first to suggest that specific changes in EEG (electroencephalogram) were diagnostic of epilepsy.

Although an admirer of Freud, Velikovsky set out to disprove the latter's claim, that Moses was a follower of the Pharaoh Akhenaton or Pharaoh himself, as Freud suggested in "Moses and Monotheism". Velikovsky postulated the theory that Akhenaten was the model for Oedipus in Greek mythology. This began a second career of research and writings in archeology, biblical investigation, and cosmology in which Velikovsky tried to change the accepted chronology of ancient Egyptian kings and dynasties by interpreting or misinterpreting ancient documents (Eg: the Ipuwer papyrus, Mesopotamian cuneiforms etc).
In 1939, Velikovsky travelled to New York, ostensibly to do research for his planned book "Oedipus and Akhenaton" but remained permanently in the USA after the WW ll broke out. He eventually ended up in Princeton, New Jersey, where he became acquainted with Albert Einstein with whom he authored a two volume scientific treatise "Scripta Universitatis Atque Bibliothecae Hierosolymitanum" that became a foundation for the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Velikovsky's early work gave him credence in the scientific community but when he drifted to the far reaches of accepted dogma he was ostracized by most main stream scientists. This began with his pamphlets "Cosmos without Gravitation" and "Theses for the reconstruction of ancient history" that he self-published in 1945 and distributed to universities and scientists. His 1950 opus the "Worlds in Collision" placed him irretrievably in the "catastrophists" camp. Einstein distanced himself from Velikovsky and Harvard astronomer Harlow Shapley mounted a campaign to prevent publication of the book by the academic press. It was eventually published by Double Day and became a national best seller. This was followed by "Ages in Chaos" (1952) and "Earth in Upheaval"(1955), "Peoples of the Sea" (1977), "Rameses ll and his time" (1978) and "Grave diggers and Star gazers" published humorously (1983).
Astrophysicist Carl Sagan (1934-1996) criticized Velikovsky in his book "Broca's Brain: Reflections on the Romance of Science (1977) and debunked pseudo-science in his best seller "The Demon-Haunted world" which he co-authored with Ann Druyan in 1997.

Stephen Jay Gould (1941-2002), the brilliant scientist polymath said it best : "Velikovsky is neither a crank nor charlatan...he is at least gloriously wrong.... Velikovsky would rebuild the science of celestial mechanics to save the literal accuracy of ancient legends" (paraphrased).

Gordin writes:"The more successful science becomes, the more outsiders will want to participate in the process" and explains the concept of the "demarcation problem" in science (Karl Popper 1920) "Scientists will always demarcate, beause part of what science is..is an exclusion of some domains as irrelevant, rejected, outdated or incorrect".

The danger of pseudo-science, as expounded by fringe so-called scholars and some established academics, is the negative effect it has on the credulity of the non-scientifically educated majority of the population and its impact on society and its future viz. "Lysenkoinism, creationism, flood geology, global warming denial etc.."

However, we should be careful not to reject new ideas or theories simply because they challenge the status quo. Velikovsky's entire body of work should not be dismissed off-hand because many of his ideas contradict physical and geological realities; presently serious work is being conducted into revising the chronology of the dynasties and pharaohs and so-called "dark period" of the ancient cultures. Throwing the baby with the water is contradictory to investigative science - a good primer on the subject is Thomas Kuhn's "The structure of Scientific Revolutions".

The debate continues to this day as shown by the arguments of Ellenberger (erstwhile disciple and now critic of Velikovsky) and Greenberg (friend, defender and supporter of Velikovsky and his ideas) in the "Comments" section of the reviews.

A fascinating look at demarcation "in practice"
    By Daniel Hicks
I'm a philosopher of science, and I read this book with the History and Philosophy of Science Reading Group at the University of Notre Dame in Spring 2013. My assessment of the book is thoroughly positive, and I believe most of the other participants would agree. It is an engaging and fascinating narrative, easy to read through for pleasure, but still having enough depth and scholarly engagement for hard-nosed academics. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who enjoys reading about science (and its counterpart, pseudoscience).

Philosophically, Gordin's book is extremely interesting for its approach to (what we philosophers call) the "demarcation problem." How do you distinguish -- demarcate -- that activity we call science from non-scientific pretenders? Common examples in the second category include alchemy, astrology, phrenology (studying the shape of skulls), creation science, and science under the Nazi regime and Lysenko in the Soviet Union. More controversial or difficult cases include Freudian psychology, Marxism, and evolution by natural selection ("Darwinism").

A classic attempted solution to this problem is from the Austrian-British philosopher Karl Popper. Popper said that "falsifiability" was the crucial feature: If your hypothesis makes predictions that can be empirically refuted, then (and only then) is it science. Even today, scientists offer this solution when creation science (and intelligent design, a descendent better adapted to our regulatory environment) rears its head. But contemporary philosophers of science generally agree that refutation isn't as clear-cut as Poppers solution assumes. You might remember an announcement from some European scientists in the summer of 2011 that they had measured some neutrinos traveling faster than the speed of light. But Einstein's theories of relativity are built on the assumption that the speed of light is absolute -- nothing can travel faster. So Einstein would seem to have been refuted. Actually, no: the community of physicists poured over the data and experimental setup, eventually concluding that there were errors in the calculation. In other words, Einstein's theories were protected from empirical refutation, at least in this case. By Popper's lights, this would have made these theories unfalsifiable, and hence pseudoscience. But of course they're not pseudoscience. Popper's criterion won't work; it's simply too simple.

Since recognizing this problem, other philosophers have attempted to develop other solutions. All have been found wanting. Gordin is quite clear from the outset that he doesn't think these efforts will succeed. So if we want to understand how science and pseudoscience are separate, we need to look at the ways that scientists themselves socially marginalize pseudoscientists: writing critical essays, keeping their books from being published, excluding them from conferences, firing their supporters, and so on. Gordin's primary narrative deals with Imanuel Velikovsky, a psychoanalyst who argued -- among many outlandish things -- that Venus was a comet from Jupiter that had nearly collided with the Earth, and that this explained many of the supernatural-sounding events of Exodus. Gordin also incorporates side-narratives, presenting other pseudosciences as similar cases, such as Lysenkoism, eugenics, and Young-Earth creationism.

The result, overall, is an engaging tour of the margins of twentieth century science, with enough scholarly substance to keep a roomful of philosophers and historians busy for several weeks. Gordin's book has my highest recommendation for both popular and academic readers.

Edit 2013-03-10: Fixed a typo pointed out by an astute reader.

The Lopsided Ape: Evolution of the Generative Mind, by Michael C. Corballis

What is it that allows human beings to think the way we do? What enables us to communicate with one another through the use of speech? Is the difference between Homo sapiens and other apes simply a matter of degree or are we unique and discontinuous from other species? Michael C. Corballis argues that this century-old debate lies in the fact that humans are the only primates that are predominantly right-handed, a sign of the specialization of the left hemisphere of the brain for language. He attributes humans' unique abilities to a biological mechanism in the left hemisphere of the brain called a "generative learning device" or GAD. The GAD, Corballis contends, enables us to generate a limitless number of forms and meanings from a few parsed elements, providing the basis for language and manufacture as well as mathematics, reasoning, art, music, and play. Surveying the current views of evolution using evidence from archeology, linguistics, neurology, and genetics, Corballis takes us on a fascinating tour of the origins and implications of the structure of the human brain accounting for the dominance of humanity over all species.

    From Library Journal
Are humans unique and discontinuous from other animals? How did our generative and creative capacities develop? These and other questions are presented in an exhaustive, step-by-step fashion in the course of which central issues in the areas of linguistics and evolutionary theory are made accessible to the lay reader. The author (psychology, Univ. of Auckland, New Zealand) follows both a logical, theory-building but also historical sequence within each chapter, going beyond Chomskyan linguistics (which argues that children possess specific linguistic abilities that enable them to learn language) to contend that language reflects a more basic human capacity to represent experience and to generate infinite representations--of which language is but one example. This complete, lucid presentation in the burgeoning field of cognitive psychology will be challenging but interesting to lay readers, and valuable to a broad group of scholars.

    Review
"Corballis...tackles this immensely difficult and multifaceted subject in a lively and engaging way and presents his views crisply, thoughtfully, and always with a modesty and a touch of good humor. The Lopsided Ape is full of intellectual riches, and it deserves and, I hope, will find a wide readership." --Science

"This complete, lucid presentation in the burgeoning field of cognitive psychology will be challenging but interesting to lay readers, and valuable to a broad group of scholars." --Library Journal

"A thoroughly intoxicating study...handsomely organized and clearly written." --Booklist

"Wide-ranging and erudite. . .An excellent read, enlivened by many anecdotes, historical details and jokes." --Nature

"A remarkable blend of erudition, clarity and humor. . .This book is compulsive reading." --The Times Higher Education Supplement

"The Lopsided Ape offers much to think about and Corballis provides a thorough review of the relevant literature." --Choice

"Opposing theories are presented with clarity and economy. The selection of research reports and helpful diagrams augment the usefulness of the work. . .provides an excellent overview of many current key issues in human and language origin theory, presents them in highly readable, jargon-free prose and in a well-organized, logical format. The book should be of value not only to human and language evolution theorists but to specialists and nonspecialists concerned with understanding human 'nature' and behavior." --Language Origins Society (LOS) Forum

"Fun reading. From the wealth of his substantial scholarship, Corballis embeds the presentation of GAD within a framework of questions that are of enduring interest to most of us. The initial salvo is a fascinating history of human uniqueness. This volume constitutes a valuable, if not the ultimate, contribution to this literature." --Contemporary Psychology

"Overall, the book is enjoyable and accessible reading for the nonspecialist and specialist alike, laced with interesting commentary on the history and cultural contexts of many of the topics covered." --International Journal of Primatology

"An excellent overview."--Alfred W. Kaszniak, University of Arizona

Why people have right/left hemisphere preferences.
    By markbcki@dragonet.es
This is a wonderful book and a really stimulating read. It's beautifully written and researched ( hundreds of references) and tells the story of the evolution of language from the time of its appearance among the earliest humans.
It shows how the overwhelming importance of speech has moulded the brain and it draws on evidence from the fossil record, DNA analysis, phases of reaching maturity, anatomy, experimental evidence and the greater or lesser role that genes play with respect to culture and learning.
The book has changed my way of looking at these things.

    Right-handedness and language
    By John Duncan
Most people are right-handed, though with a substantial minority of left-handers: this is such a familiar feature of human existence that we rarely think about it at all (especially if we are right-handed), and now that schools no longer try to force left-handers to write with the right hand, the psychological and emotional problems that this once produced have become a distant memory. Michael Corballis, however, thinks about handedness a great deal, and has devoted a large part of his career as a professor of psychology to studying it.

Because we don't think about it much at all, we don't usually notice that bias towards right-handness is a specifically human characteristic. Although animals may prefer to do some actions with one foot rather than the other, they show no consistent bias. To find a comparable case we need to go as far afield as to parrots, which generally prefer to pick up bits of food with their left feet, while standing on their right.

I usually regard discussion left-brain and right-brain specialization as the sort of science that belongs in popular magazines, to be read, perhaps, while waiting for a dental appointment, but otherwise to be treated with the same disdain as signs of the zodiac. Unlike signs of the zodiac, however, lateral specialization of the brain has a perfectly serious aspect, and Corballis makes a strong case that strong handedness in humans is related to an apparently quite different special characteristic of humans, their capacity for language.

    Human Cerebral Asymmetry
    By Cam Davis
Corballis is an esteemed researcher AND an engaging writer which makes his research palatable to both the scientific community and to the lay public at large. If you're interested in developmental psychobiology and cognitive neuroscince - or if you ~think~ you might be - you can't go wrong with this publication.
