About the Author
Dr. Howard Bandy has both the formal education and practical experience required to write this book. He has degrees in mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science. He was a professor of computer science and mathematics, vice-president and designer of a commercially successful stock selection and timing program, and senior research analyst for a Commodity Trading Advisor where he held a Series 3 license.

Another major contribution to the theory, understanding and practice of Quantitative Technical Analysis

“Mean Reversion Trading Systems” (2013) is yet another major contribution to the theory, understanding and practice of Quantitative Technical Analysis by Dr Howard Bandy. This follows his superb earlier books “Quantitative Trading Systems” (2008) and “”Modelling Trading System Performance” (2011).
In this latest book Dr Bandy has built on and extended the thinking of his previous books. Howard has both a deep and broad statistical, mathematical and computational understanding of both financial markets, quantitative trading models and resultant systems when markets and models are combined. In addition, he has the written clarity and educational ability to explain the complexities in a way that an intelligent trader can understand and follow.
Throughout this book, as with his earlier work, Howard organises subject material logically and then explains concepts succinctly with language appropriate to a general (but intelligent) trading audience. His work has academic rigour but is designed for the non-academic, his description of probabilities and statistical analysis in the financial markets are second to none. Following conceptual descriptions, Howard then provides many worked examples and, where appropriate, computer code that demonstrates and amplifies the points he is making.
Dr Bandy works to create understanding of the complete trading model including: Issue selection, Entries, Exits, Risk assessment, Position sizing, Model development, Model-System Walk-forward back testing etc. He also looks at the “transformation” of common indicators to produce clearer and more reliable trading results. In one transformation example the Wilders RSI is mathematically reconstructed to produce the same results but to allow the parameter (days) to be a continuous decimal number rather than a whole number, this is particularly useful when using models with low parameter values. Finally, while his focus is on education and creating understanding, he does provided a range of suggested trading models and systems that can form the basis of systems that the reader can adopt for their own trading. Again, as an example, the book provides a fully documented approach showing how a model utilising the VIX can be used to trade other instruments that have strong correlation with the VIX. The demonstrated equity curve is impressive.

Dr Howard Bandy is new to Amazon but I (along with others) have been following his work closely since 2008. Howard’s work has revolutionised my trading. I have been an active trader, managing family funds for more than 20 years. I am a long term member, office bearer and former National President of the Australian Technical Analyst Association (ATAA) and also a director of IFTA. Over the years I have been a keen student in the field of Technical Analysis and have consumed many books on the subject. Some of my past favoured authors have included David Aronson, Ralph Vince, Larry Connors, Mark Jurik, Perry Kaufman, Benoit Mandelbrot, Nassim Taleb, John Bollinger, Thomas Stridesman and Katz & McCormick.
From my personal trading experience I strongly recommend “Mean Reversion Trading Systems”, along with Dr Bandy’s previous books, to any financial market trader interested in fully understanding and developing competent quantitative trading systems.

At last, a book that provides trading systems that actually work...

Bandy preaches an approach to the market which makes a lot of sense. Trade systems that trade frequently, have a short holding period and high win rate. The result of which is consistent returns with low drawdown and excellent compounding potential. In this book he outlines a number of systems of that nature, and provides the actual system code, along with the test results and metrics which prove his claims. Bandy has spent most of his life working on trading system design, and in a sense this is a distillation of what he believes works best, having tried no doubt hundreds of approaches.
Unlike most of the trading books out there which are big on claims, but short on evidence, this book is a practical guide to designing and building mean reversion trading systems that actually work. If you're just getting started in system design, or are looking for fresh ideas, this book will be a valuable addition to your library.

Seriously insightful, but for the technically-minded only.

This is an insightful book that has rally doubled my knowledge of quantitative trading in one reading. And it's the sort of book that one wants to read many times as new ideas and questions form. I like mr bandy's style a lot. His no-nonsense approach requires everything to be tested, which is right up my alley. No fluffy candlestick patterns or trend lines or anything that can't be rigorously tested.
One limitation of the book though is that it is heavily oriented around the AmiBroker trading/back testing software. Anyone who has done a fair amount of coding in other platforms should have no trouble translating, but it does make the book somewhat specialized. If you have an interest in swing trading systems that can be rigorously tested though, don't miss this book!
