Wonderfully written

Kenneth Anderson has an enviable knack of transporting the reader into the Indian jungle with him. For those of us who have been fortunate enough to experience the special magic in a dense forest with wild animals - this is a treasure.
After a long time, his books are available again. This is a book to be read and re-read, as these jungles are fast dwindling and the magic will soon only be left in books like these.

About the Author
HILLARY DRUMMOND-SIMPSON is first and foremost a mother who knows firsthand the challenges of raising a successful black man. Her broader perspective comes from being an educator for more than twenty years in three different states, during which she has found the recurring problem of underachieving African-American boys. In 2004, she set about solving the problem by forming Boys to Men, through which black boys are mentored by male leaders in the black community. This group has branches in Newark, New Jersey, and Conyers, Georgia, where Drummond-Simpson currently teaches.

Good Advice

This is a book you can and SHOULD read with your child; particularly the parts on "Advice to Boys." Some inspiring (but not so famous) men are featured, from teachers to entrepreneurs. Black men are doing some great things out there, despite the obstacles (and evening news). Success is not so much about money as it is about confidently making one's own positive path in this life. I think young men will read this and think, "If I was featured in this book, how would my story read?" Can't help but feel "proud to be Black" after reading this book. I will continue to refer to this book for years to come. Parents are encouraged to keep hoping, sacrificing and persevering for our children's sake.

Fantastic Read for Parents as Well

This book sounds like it is written for the black male but it is a also a great read for any parent. I like especially how the featured successful young men give advice to the parents. That was very helpful for me. I also found useful the way the author starts off with her own son and tells her trials as a parent. I could identify a lot with what she said. Most important for today's black man is the advice in the last chapter that tells them how to deal with law enforcement...this information could save our boys' lives!

Another Great de Burgh Book!!

This is the 3rd book in the de Burgh brother series following "Taming the Wolf" and "The de Burgh Bride." The book was very entertaining and it was great to see serious warrior Simon rubbing his chest and suffering from lovesickness!! Bethia was a great heroine - tough and strong when she needed to be, but also compassionate and caring. Ms. Simmons does a great job at interjecting just enough humor so that we see Simon as man with feelings and not just as a knight who barks commands and expects to be obeyed. The only complaint I have is that the rest of the de Burgh brothers didn't appear until so late in the story!! I hope the next book (maybe Robin's story?) brings up to date on not only Simon & Bethia, but also Dunstan & Marion and Geoff & Elene. But what ever brother is up next - I'll be sure to read all about him!!

Not my favorite De Burgh!

After devouring Taming the Wolf and the De Burgh Bride, I was eagerly awaiting Simon's story. While this is a "not to be missed series", Robber Bride left much to be desired.

Robber Bride is much more "battle focused" than "romance focused". I guess this is what I should've expected with Simon's story as he is the "warrior" of the bunch. What I didn't expect was to feel such apathy for these characters. I guess this is a matter of preference, but I like my heroines tough, but also "soft". They need to be able to hold their own, but also make me believe that they have heart. In the De Burgh Bride, the Fitzhugh was also a tough lady.....but throughout the story we see her vulnerability and the gradual opening of her heart. I never felt this with Bethia. I found myself hoping that the next chapter would get better, but alas I was disappointed at every turn.

Towards the end I found myself speed reading to get through to the end....not a good sign for me. Whereas with Taming the Wolf and the De Burgh Bride I found myself stalling so that the book wouldn't end and "savoring" each paragraph....RELIEF is the emotion I felt when turning the last page of this book.

In a series there are usually books that are "better than others"...for me this one fell short. I still recommend this series wholeheartedly and hope that the next brother's stories more resemble the first two!

Not Just A Prize....A WINNER Also.

She's done it again, that is to say she has thrilled us with another witty, creative and lustful tale surrounding the "Campion Bros". Robber Bride was great.... Simon, who I must confess was my least favorite brother won my heart! The story while captivating was a quick and easy read ( a one-nighter for sure). Of course, now Simmons has me absolutely panting to know who will be the next DeBurgh to bite the "bachelorhood dust"......frankly I can't wait to find out how Stephen and Reynold are to be transformed.....What A Prize!

Gisa Rauh has been Professor of Linguistics in the English Department of the University of Wuppertal since 1985. She taught previously at Gottingen University and the Free University of Berlin. Her areas of research include theoretical and empirical aspects of deixis, the theory of thematic relations, the syntax of prepositions and prepositional phrases in English, aspects of the lexicon, and linguistic categorization. She has been involved in various large-scale projects, among them Theory of the Lexicon and the European Network Project in the Area of Languages. Her books include Linguistische Beschreibung deiktischer Komplexitat in narrativen Texten (Narr, 1978), Essays on Deixis (Narr, 1983), Tiefenkasus, thematische Relationen und Thetarollen. I quite like this book.

For example, it has a very nice discussion of radiometry. It even has sample questions so that you can verify your understanding.

On a number of topics, it has a clear discussion that has enough depth that you will not need additional references. This includes the ideas of NEP and detector noise.

Solid reference guide for general IR detection concepts. For example the radiometry section is good. The only other books I would recommend are John David Vincent's book on IR detectors and Rogalski's book if you need a technology specific review.

Does what it says on the tin.

Excellent book for architecture students, explaining the most architecturally popular philosophical ideas in a clear and engaging manner. As well as explaining how architects took philosophical ideas as a basis for their aesthetics, the book also charts how changes in the philosophical landscape influenced how architects thought about the world and their place in it. There's long asides (e.g.. on Heidegger's Nazi past) in places that don't have much relevance to architecture or the understanding of the philosophy, but these are entertaining and informative in their own right.

Cabrera is the best!

If your looking for a book on the afro-cuban religions, this is possibly the best one written. Cuban anthropologist Lydia Cabrera has written one of the best books on the subject. She discusses the myths, rituals and history of the religions derived from the congo and from the yoruba people who were brought as slaves into Cuba. In addition, Cabrera's text has a mamomth dictionary of various herbs, fruits, and vegetables, explaining who their spiritual owner is in addition to what the item can be used for. Cabrera also discusses the secret society of the Nanigos. It's a shame that this text has yet to be translated into English as it deserves to have a wider audience. Nonetheless, if you can read in spanish and are interested in this subject, this is definately a book to buy!

Lydia's books are all very nice when it comes to the explanation of things and their history.

As a notice to the readers of Afro-Cuban Religion books;

Take the readings only as theory since the practice varies greatly amongst the branches of the religions. You have to be iniciated in, Palo, Santo, Ifa, or Abakua to learn the real secrets, so don't expect to read them on a book. Some of the authors present you with too much information, like actual rituals and the making of talismans...Don't do it, as it is disrespectful to the dieties, and to the practioners, not to mentention the bad consecuences which your curiosity might bring upon you.

So read on for educational purposes and don't allow your curiosity to get you in trouble :) .

I also recomend any of the books by Natalia Bolívar Aróstegui, an excellent writer in the field and having met her in person I can tell you that she's very dedicated.

Although an HEA, would've liked a better ending

I enjoyed this book, however, she needs someone to help her edit this book. There quite a few grammatical errors throughout the book as well as some places where you could definitely tell a word was missing from the sentence. I kept thinking 'did she even bother to look over this book for errors?' because there were some spots that were very obvious that something was wrong. My only other qualm is that the ending was a HEA, it felt very abrupt because they have a scene with the parents and it was pretty much like "if you don't like it, oh well" and then "The End". That made it feel like the author was in a hurry to get the book done so she just wrote something real quick to end it. Even if she wanted to end the book with being confronted by the parents, I think it could've been better executed with maybe the confrontation first and perhaps a small prolog ie. For instance, 2 months later. Other than those 2 things, I enjoyed the book.

A review as appeared in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis,July 1997,Volume XLV, Number 3. The Handbook of Hypnotic Phenomena in Psychotherapy presents a discussion and an exploration of the use of the hypnotic phenomena that are the natural outgrowth of trance. The authors describe in detail the different hypnotic phenomena and how they can be used therapeutically for clinical interventions. The hypnotic phenomena discussed in this book include amnesia, hypermnesia, posthypnotic suggestion, time distortion, age regression, future progression, dissociation, hypnotic dreaming, catalepsy, arm levitation and ideomotor signaling, automatic writing, anesthesia and analgesia, hyperesthesia, and positive and negative hallucinations. The Edgettes present their material from a theoretical orientation that is largely based on an Ericksonian approach. Nevertheless, their presentation of the potential clinical applicaitons of the various hypnotic phenomena, as demonstrated by a number of clinical case examples, would be of general relevance to clinicians from a wide range of theoretical orientations. The authors' stated goal in this book is to take the practitioner of hypnosis beyond the use of hypnotic phenomena as an indicator of successful clinical induction or as a measurement of hypnotic induction and depth in laboratory experiments. Instead, they explore and explain how these hypnotic phenomena can be used as a vehicle for clinical intervention. In my opiniion, the Edgettes have been highly successful in achieving their goal. They have written an extremely clear and readable explanation of the potential for using hypnotic phenomena in clinical interventions. There is a chapter devoted to each of the hypnotic phenomena. Each chapter is then organized into clear and consistent subdivisions covering such topics as experimental studies, indications for use, contradications, techniques of eliciting the phenomenon, and selected case examples and transcript material. As a clinician working in the field of psychotherapy and using hypnosis in my practice, I found the chapters discussing the specific phenomena and their clinical applications to be of most interest. In contrast, I found the introductory chapters to be less interesting and useful. However, a research-oriented reader or clinician with a different backgraound might well feel differently. In regard to the chapters dealing with the different hypnotic phenomena, some wonderful excerpts are provided of verbalizations that could be used in specific clinical situations. An example of such excerpts is the authors' description of the use of the hypnotic phenomenon of amnesia to help a client "forget to remember about that old habit" of smoking (p.51). The chapter on the phenomenon of age regression was of special interest to me as a clinician because of my own work in this field: particularly in the use of age regression with "creative self-mothering" and the creation of "healing scripts" for clients with severely abusive or deprived backgrounds. In discussing their work in this area, the authors appropriately note that clients working with these issues may require special care and expertise on the part of the therapist due to the clients' impairment and vulnerability. However, the authors also support the use of age regression as a tool for creating positive images and feelings in such severely deprived clients. They suggest that hypnosis can purposefully and therapeutically augment the client's personal history. In summary, I feel that The Handbook of Hypnotic Phenomena in Psychotherapy is an excellent book. It provides a new perspective on the importance of hypnotic phenomena, and it also opens the way for potentially new and expanding uses of these phenomena in the clinical setting as vehicles of therapeutic intervention.
