The author has a solid grasp of the history and reports it in a well done no-nonsense style without any hint of bias. I find this refreshing in a book about this war. Most of the books I have read on the subject have a definite English bias, at least in the amount of information about each side in the war. So thank you Mr. Falkner, and Casemate, for this book. It brings to life the war and its battles, and campaigns, and is a great addition to anyone's library. (Wargamers Needful Things)

Wonderful Presentation

This book delivers a comprehensive rendering of the War of the Spanish Succession. This conflict was fought between 1701 and 1714 to decide who should inherit the Spanish throne, as the name implies. The scope of the war included western Europe, the high seas and the Americas.however, as the author indicates this war is not well known or understood. In fact, I would venture to say that most people may have heard of certain limited aspects of the conflict through the works of Winston Churchill, who wrote about his ancestor, John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough. Yet even this extraordinary, undefeated, soldier is seldom mentioned when people speak of the great generals of history.

This book presents this massive struggle in a clear and perceptive narrative that both describes and analyses the complex political environment and military campaigns. The author discusses events and personalities with balance and context that provides the reader insight into a complex and unfamiliar world. I was especially struck by the resilience of Louis XIV's France, which was opposed by the Grand Alliance consisting of Great Britain, Holland, Austria and Portugal. Although the Duke of Marlborough and Louis XIV clearly dominated the era, the author did not neglect to present finely drawn portraits of other important, but perhaps lesser known, individuals such as Prince Eugene, Marshal Villars, Queen Anne and the Duke of Berwick. The battles are described in just the right amount of detail.
Although the author has done an excellent job in simplifying the murky political maneuvers, this was still a bit hard for me to follow and to discern the significance of some events. In addition, although the text contains a few good maps, because the geography is unfamiliar and troop movements are complex, several more simple maps would have greatly enhanced my ability to follow the action.

This is what I needed!

I would recommend this book to any woman who feels like she is running out of patience waiting on a good man! If everyone around you is getting married and you're constantly a guest or a bridesmaid and its leaving you frustrated; this is the book for you! You will feel the pressure lifted off of you! This is by no means a book on how to get and keep a man but a book about having the will to wait on God. Maybe you're not ready for marriage and this book will point it out! It's personal and everyone will take a piece of it and apply it to their own lives I'm sure!

Very cool (if you love history)

This is a collection of documents that were written on Egyptian temples all translated in english and just has so many very interesting documents some that I have never heard of and others that I have heard of but have only had small portions of them in history books. It was a required book for a history class but I will be keeping it because it gives you much more insight into the lives and laws of early civilizations. Amazing laws and documents that before 1500BCE you may think that they only existed in much later time periods. Interesting insights into the people and the detail of record keeping that some culutres had. If you love history of this era it is a must have.

Pretty interesting anecdotes

Got for a class. Pretty interesting anecdotes. This book is mostly selected texts/stories from ancient texts. Has some back-story and info on the context. I can't see this being very informative in a stand-alone setting, seems to be intended to be used along with other textbooks, aid in lectures, or as homework to supplement other lectures (which is what it was used for in my class.)

A Good Beginner Book but Dangerous

I found Vw Beetle Performance Handbook by Keith Seume the perfect book for a beginner. It has valuable information on all aspects of building a car Suspension, Brakes, Transmission, and Engine. I will definetly use much of the upgrades he described. Yet I find many of his engine modifications dangerous. What I mean by this is he says for the ultimate motor. Get an 84x94 engine, 44x37.5 heads, MSD 6AL, merged header with turbo muffler, and Weber 48 IDA's. This is all in all good advice yet he completely neglects valvetrain geometry and connecting rods. Without strengthening the valvetrain you will most likely suck a valve putting a piston through the case and wrecking the rod. Without stengthening the rod the most likely reaction to this would be a snapped connecting-rod effectivley wrecking you crank, head, and case. His vague descriptions could ultimately wreck YOUR case, connecting rods, piston, heads, and your bone-stock valvetrain geometry. In summation a good beginner book but his vague descriptions could paint you into a corner. I would definetly recomend you read a more specified book like VW Interchange Manual before attempting any major modifications.

I found VW Beetle Performance Handbook a very informative book especially for a beginner. It had musch usefull information that I will surely apply to my car. Yet I feel this book lacks in description. It lays out the preliminary knowledge but in no way talks about wether larger carbs or cams will affect driveability. It's engine enhancements advice are definetly dangerous for example it tells you for the ultimate motor an 84x94, 48 Weber IDA, 44x37.5 heads, large cam, MSD 6al ignition, and merger header with a turbo. He left out such important things such as the valvetrain geometry and the connecting rods. With this combination an engine could easily make 3 times its original output yet with no modifications to increase the valvetrain strength the most likely recourse would be for your engine to suck a valve and shoot a piston through the case effectively wrecking the piston, rods, head, and maybe even the case. So in summation good information yet a little vague I would suggest this book to gain a preliminary knowledge but consult something a little descriptive like the VW Interchange Manual.
