Absolutlely essential tool for Outlook Programming

I am a little more than a novice with VBA, but with Sue's details and explaination of the complex syntax required by Outlook, real progress was possible. I have been able to build an Outlook form with VB Script that collects data form a large number of people within my company and store it on a public foler for futher use and reference. It only took a few weeks to do that and it would not have been possible without this book. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Dave Hutchinson was born in Sheffield in 1960. After reading American Studies at the University of Nottingham, he became a journalist. He's the author of five collections of short stories and two novels, and his novella The Push was shortlisted for the 2010 BSFA award for short fiction. He has also edited two anthologies and co-edited a third. His short story 'The Incredible Exploding Man' featured in the first Solaris Rising anthology, and was selected for the Year's Best Science Fiction collection. He lives in north London with his wife and several cats.

An excellent return to Hutchinson's near-future balkanized Europe

Europe at Midnight isn’t so much a direct sequel to Europe in Autumn as it is a companion piece. Those hoping for the continued adventures of Rudi, coureur-chef may be disappointed to find themselves following two plotlines on another branch of the railway, but I think that was the right choice. I’ll also note that while the book can be read semi-independent of Europe in Autumn, the first book did such a wonderful job of drawing the reader in while introducing its setting, while Europe at Midnight all but throws the reader into the plot on page one. I vastly prefer that to a tedious “let’s recap the last book” chapter, or worse, ongoing exposition dumps, but I can see how a first-time reader could be overwhelmed without knowledge from the first book to set expectations. (To be honest, I wrote this expecting the reader to have some familiarity with the first book.)

The novel’s first storyline follows a man with the nom-de-plume Rupert of Hentzau. Rupe’s an intelligence officer for the mysterious “Campus,” a warped vision of a university’s hierarchical structure turned into its own sovereign state, existing in war-torn disarray. Rupert investigates dead bodies dredged up from the river, though indications are that others managed to escape the Campus. That’s a baffling thought, as here there is nothing but the Campus. It doesn’t take much to assume the Campus isn’t exactly in the fragmented Europe we know but exists in a pocket universe; Rupert does make the trip to the continent as he’s sucked into his own Ruritanian intrigues, coaxed off the Campus by intrigues most nefarious.

Meanwhile. Jim is an intelligence officer for the English government, tasked with keeping tabs on the new nations springing up overnight. With an independent England on edge from the Global War on Terror, its population recovering from the Xian flu, and watching Europe in geopolitical freefall, there are plenty of potential threats that could catch Jim’s professional interest. So it’s telling when Jim is called in to investigate the stabbing of a man on a bus, a mere assault case that’s anything but. The victim’s identity and origin are key to a larger intrigue, where England may find itself at war with not just another state but another universe…

Europe at Midnight jumps between these two narratives, each a kind of police procedural turned spy thriller. These two entwined plots lead through a series of deep and layered secrets, all the way back to Europe in Autumn‘s big SFnal twist: the existence of another universe, overlaying Europe somehow. Not only does the novel cover a fragmented Europe continually shedding micro-states and polities, it takes several long glances at the Community, an alternate Europe crafted by some canny 18th-century cartographers who created their own world—the Europe of an Agatha Christie cozy, where a prim and proper English countryside overran the continent. One of Hutchinson’s masterstrokes with Autumn was the guidebook feel, with an overview of each polity the plot criss-crossed. Not only does that continue—here’s a glance at the Eurovision contest, already all kitsch and camp and national identity, now with 532 entries—but it takes a long look that expands upon the Community.

Needless to say, Europe at Midnight has a faster pace than its predecessor; as mentioned it jumps into Rupe’s plot without nary an aside, and continues to ramp up in intensity and mystery with every chapter. The protagonists are more mysterious and less defined than Rudi was, but are well-characterized: Rupert is like a bumbling academic, especially in the foreign land of England, while Jim is more the consummate professional. The writing and plotting are well-balanced, making for a very engaging novel—it’s a hard book to put down. I do have to say, I didn’t find it as immediately accessible; within a few pages I guessed the Campus was in a pocket-universe—the Community fresh in memory—but the sheer inexplicable weirdness of this construct was disorienting at first. And it’s worth noting that much of the novel takes place in either a pocket-universe or England, and rarely visits the fascinating geopolitical chaos on the continent.

What the Fractured Europe Sequence excels at is taking the spy thrillers of the Cold War era and recasting them as slick, modern SF. It’s a deep look at a fascinating near-future world, and a constant reminder of how history and geopolitics shape the future. An author needs to be clever and deft to handle a complex, multi-layered plot of this magnitude, and Hutchison nails it; that’s not even taking into the account the depth of this setting, furthering the real world’s complexity with science fiction. Really, quibbles aside, Europe at Midnight is a smart and sophisticated SF novel, possibly even outsmarting its readers. Luckily it continues with bragging, encouraging readers on through its engaging characterization and riveting plot. If you can stick with the convoluted plot, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most intelligent and well-written SF novels in print today.

You can't get to Ernshire from here

A little bit Twilight Zone, a bit more Southern Reach, and a lot of China Miéville, "Europe at Midnight" is about a place you can't get to from here.

“In October 1822, the Whitton-Whyte [family] publish the first edition of Sheet 2000, a map of the area to the West of London. It contains a number of... errors. It includes a village called ‘Stanhurst,’ where no such village exists. Over the next seventy years or so, they publish a number of revisions which not only compound the error, but add to it, until the final revision shows a completely imaginary county, called ‘Ernshire,’ in great detail." "There’s an invisible county where Heathrow is, it’s full of people, and we have no idea what they’re doing." It's a pocket universe.

The situation is no clearer inside Ernshire where rival factions are at war for control of what? A tiny country that you can ride across on a bicycle.

I have not read "Europe in Autumn" and I enjoyed the added surrealism of not having an information base. I felt exhilarated, much as I did when I mistook the title order of Southern Reach and started with Book 2.

Very little is what it seems. The characters are intelligent, if a bit impenetrable. I enjoyed reading.

If you like John LaCarre you will probably like this book

I agree with an earlier reviewer who said "Europe at Midnight isn’t so much a direct sequel to Europe in Autumn as it is a companion piece" however, it helps a lot if you have read Europe in Autumn, because you need to know what Couriers are and what they do to get the most from this book. If you like John LaCarre you will probably like this book. Like LaCarre the author does not spell everything out and trusts that the reader will fill in the appropriate blanks. The main role for fantasy in this book is to provide another "country" to the political mix. If you like espionage stories and you like LaCarre's style then I think you will like this book.

About the Author
Frederic Remington was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in depictions of cowboys, Indians, and the US Cavalry of the American West in the late 1800s. Love of adventure and the great outdoors, especially in the West, were the bonds that sealed the friendship between Theodore Roosevelt and Frederic Remington. "I wish I were with you out among the sage brush, the great brittle cottonwoods, and the sharply-channeled barren buttes," Roosevelt wrote to the western artist in 1897 from Washington. In 1888, Century Magazine published a series of articles about the West written by Roosevelt and illustrated by Remington.

Excellent!

I can't believe people aren't reading this books by Remington, and they lack reviews. They are wonderful! The writing is very direct, exact, full of color and texture with always a touch of humor and a sense of the personality this writer brings to the table. This is collection of stories from Remington's own experiences, and as usual in his writings provides first hand accounts of life during the late 1800's, whether hunting bear, riding in a stagecoach or wandering with the Army among the Sioux, not to mention many other examples. The only disappointment is in the Kindle edition there are no illustrations that were offered in the original hard copy.

This collection of stories by Frederic Remington supposedly reflects events that occurred while Remington traveled with US military troops. As a noted artist he was evidently welcome to travel and associate with officers and troops on maneuvers. There is some lyrically beautiful writing here, also some wonderfully funny stories as good as Mark Twains or better. Very enjoyable dry and sly wit when he's writing well. All the stories are not equally well done, whether humorous or straight adventure, nor are they necessarily accurate and precise, (his claims about extreme distances ridden in a day on horse back are wildly exaggerated for instance .) Remington is writing for publication and exaggerates events to a certain extent to cater to his market. He also includes hearsay in some cases which will different from what is now known to be accurate. A bit of selective reading is required simply because a person can only be judged against the times in which they lived and never against the time in which a reader may live. There is a great deal of information about the times that can trigger further research by the reader... such as Yellowstone Park as it was and military troops patrolling it to control poaching .. Or the clash with anarchists... The free version does not contain pictures and if they could be seen clearly on Kindle Paper White 3 it would have been most interesting to view illustrations that went with the described adventures. Any version without excellent images would be worthless. In the free version the clickable Table of Contents works fine and the formatting is good. Remington was a remarkable artist and observer and there is an enormous amount of accurate information about people, places and the times.

I found this a sweeping, energetic read, with just enough rough-and-tumble action to counterbalance the beautifully sentimental descriptions of man isolated in the midst of virgin nature.

big pictures make it easy

The guide lists commom look alikes with very big detailed pictures. This book makes identifying with more accuracy easier for beginners. This is a book covering more common mushrooms that one would encounter during time in nature.If you are looking for a guide with all types of fungi and lengthy description, this isn't what you want. this is a handy little pocket guide.

About the Author
Bob Neale is a teacher and writer. Throughout his career, he has exercised his imagination by making up things in the overlapping areas of religion, magic, and the arts. The results have been psychological theories about death and dying, religion as mature play, and the relations of loneliness, solitude, and companionship. An understanding of the place of magic in daily life grew out of these explorations. And the expression of it was facilitated by his creation of origami models, puzzles, and tricks that are frequently presented with social, political, and philosophical meanings. He cares about magic as imagination at play in the expression of truth through illusion. Bob is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ with degrees from Amherst College and Union Theological Seminary in New York, where he taught for twenty-four years as Professor of Psychiatry and Religion. His publications during that time include In Praise of Play (1969), The Art of Dying (1973), and Loneliness, Solitude, and Companionship: New Dimensions in Relationship (1984). Bob is an internationally exhibited and published creator of origami models. In 1964, he delighted many paperfolders and magicians with his “Bunny Bill.” In 2009, his impossible object “The Impossi-Bill Braid” gave instruction on construction in both text and DVD. Between these years, he has published Origami, Plain and Simple (1994), Folding Money Fooling (1997), Frog Tales (2000), and Which Came First? A Collection of Magical Designs (2006). Bob’s essays on magic and tricks have appeared in many journals, pamphlets, and books. He was a monthly columnist for The Linking Ring for five years. His first book for magicians, Tricks of the Imagination (1991), was followed by Magic and Meaning, co-authored with Eugene Burger (1995, now in an expanded, second edition from 2009); Life, Death and Other Card Tricks (2000); The Magic Mirror, co-authored with David Parr (2002); Celebration of Sides: The Nonsense World of Robert Neale, with the assistance of Michael Weber (2006, DVD); This Is Not A Book (2008); Magic Matters (2009); Gift Magic: Performances that Leave People with a Souvenir, with Jeff McBride, George Parker, Lawrence Hass, Eugene Burger, and Rich Bloch (2010); 444 and Three More (2011); and Nine Uneasy Pieces (2012).

MUCH MORE THAN MAGIC

One can learn magic tricks. But what caught my attention is the path to enlightenment - between descriptions of performances - the Buddha would be hard pressed to do as well. What a magic ruse this book is !

Intense and Sweet

This story was one of the most intense I've read in a long time. Seriously heart-pounding, eyes-glued-to-the-page suspense, along with a sweet taste of romance carefully threaded in. As other reviewers have stated, this is not a typical romantic suspense due to the subject matter, but I loved the tender interactions between Morgan and Linc. It was just enough, IMO.

I'd also like to see more with Jackson and Gideon, especially Jackson and Molly. Loved Ms. Clark's Deadly series as well. Looking forward to her next offering!

Love the Deadly Series from this author - didn't really know what to expect with this book. Hunted deals with some harsh issues. I was hooked once I started reading and finished it in one sitting. Not a romance book in my opinion but the feelings between Morgan and Lincoln are there. Really enjoyed this book.

Seriously gripping book - if it weren't for my job I'd have finished it in one sitting. Very suspenseful and fast-moving. I wouldn't classify this as a romance in the traditional sense and I'm glad. With the subject matter, that would have been awkward and out of place. There are feelings between the two main characters, obviously, but it doesn't go much further than that.
I really like this author - she develops her characters so fully you can't help but care about them, even secondary characters. I look forward to more from her.
