The Best Undergraduate Textbook I've Seen for Genetics
By A Customer
I've just completed my first semester teaching Genetics at a small liberal arts college in Indiana. Because I was jumping into the position I was stuck using the text previously designed for the class. Almost a third of the book was classical genetics, which I enjoy, but was certainly overplayed. Molecular Biology areas were a jumble of terms to learn and lists to inscribe into their brains. The problems in the book did not reflect the material in the text, leaving the class pretty much upset with the book. By midterm it was time to find another sources for the class.
I found myself reaching for other texts, and "Genetics, Analysis and Principles" turned out to be the jewel. It is well balanced, very clearly written, and does not spend its time making students read long memory lists of genes or proteins that the class is going to forget less than two weeks after the term. I think this is largely reflected by the way he wrote the book; with input from students.
Reading the intro I was afraid that this text was going to be way over into the experimental design/ data side which I've seen in other texts mean "no content". Not so this text; experimental design has been written into the book to describe genetics and content, not replace it. I think what is truely unique about this book is the use of scientific process as a way to teach concepts. I wish I had more books like this one for other courses. I hope Dr. Brooker's format for Biology (and yes other science courses) is adopted for other courses.
If you are considering a text for your Genetics classes, I think you will be very pleased with this book.

Excellent text for self-directed learning
By Little Greek
I used this textbook in a distance learning course and have found it to be invaluable to my learnng experience.
For anyone who has taken Genetics, you'll account for the fact that it is not an easy course. Taking it without a professor present is even more challenging. Luckily this text is well written and easy to follow. The author uses a mix of theory and experiment examples to drive important concepts home. The language is not dry like in many Biology texts. Instead, it is easy to read, almost to the point of being enjoyable.
There are a few things I really liked:
1. The illustrations in this book are paramount to learning difficult concepts. When explaining experimental procedures, the text is accompanied by step-by-step instuctions and illustrations as to how the experiment was carried out. This proved helpful in visualizing the procedure.
2. Each chapter is well organized and easy to understand. The author speaks in easy to understand terms (that is if you have had previous Biology courses.) His writing style is dynamic and never boring.
3. Difficult concepts are often explained more than once. Sometimes the book gets a little ahead of itself, but page numbers and chapters are always given so you can read about things you don't understand.
4. The end of each chapter provides the reader with provocative critical thinking questions that solidify important points from the chapter. Best of all, even numbered answers are given in the back so you can check yourself without hunting through the book.
Overall I'd give this book an A and it will remain in my collection of Biology texts.

Sudent Friendly; Sometimes Wordy but Easy to Understand
By Julie
This book explains genetics concepts in a clear manner. It is was described to me as both teacher friendly and student friendly. I can easily see how it could indeed be both, though I can only comment on it from a teacher p.o.v. It is the book I've chosen to prepare my class from, and I would highly recommend it for any Genetics class.

Four brides. One Dress.

A tale of faith, redemption, and timeless love.

Charlotte owns a chic Birmingham bridal boutique. Dressing brides for their big day is her gift . . . and her passion. But with her own wedding day approaching, why can’t she find the perfect dress…or feel certain she should marry Tim?

Then Charlotte discovers a vintage dress in a battered trunk at an estate sale. It looks brand-new―shimmering with pearls and satin, hand-stitched and  timeless in its design. But where did it come from? Who wore it? Who welded the lock shut and tucked the dog tags in that little sachet? Who left it in the basement for a ten-year-old girl? And what about the mysterious man in the purple vest who insists the dress had been “redeemed.”

Charlotte’s search for the gown’s history―and its new bride―begins as a distraction from her sputtering love life. But it takes on a life of its own as she comes to know the women who have worn the dress. Emily from 1912. Mary Grace from 1939. Hillary from 1968. Each with her own story of promise, pain, and destiny. And each with something unique to share. For woven within the threads of the beautiful hundred-year-old gown is the truth about Charlotte’s heritage, the power of courage and faith, and the timeless beauty of finding true love.

“The story of four loveable women, miraculously bound by one gown, whose lives span a century . . . will take your breath away.” ―Beth Webb Hart, bestselling author of Love, Charleston

Review
"Charlotte Malone, the owner of a successful bridal shop in Birmingham, Alabama, believes the "right" dress finds its bride, not the other way around. But Charlotte can't find a dress for her own upcoming wedding. When she discovers a beautiful hundred-year-old wedding gown in a battered trunk with a welded lock, she s compelled to uncover the mystery of the dress and the three women who wore it. Eleni Pappageorge's light, airy voice fits this lovely story of faith, mystery, and magic. Her Southern accents are convincing, and one can hear a smile in her tone. Although her portrayals of the story s elderly female characters are sometimes a bit gushy, they simply add to the charm."

A sweeping romance centered around a timeless wedding dress
By Katie Garvin
I was blown away by this beautiful, awe-inspiring tale of one dress that spans--and impacts--the lives of four special women. The Wedding Dress revolves around Charlotte Malone and her discovery of the dress within an old, beaten trunk...and the path down memory lane that it took her on.

While Charlotte was the main character this story revolved around, there were a lot of other central characters as well. And while one might think that this would get confusing, Rachel Hauck did an outstanding job in making each person unique and stand out to the reader. I just loved the funny quirks some of them had! Especially the "Man in Purple" character. Put me in mind of all those sayings about 'angels in our midst'. I can't say who my favorite character was, or who I bonded with the most--the entire cast was so memorable!

I've never read anything by Hauck before, so wasn't sure what to expect from the author when beginning The Wedding Dress. But she won me over almost instantly! The way she transports her readers between historical and contemporary times was really neat, unique, and well done.

The writing style was sharp and vivid, grabbing my attention from the first page. There were several passionate kisses between characters, but Hauck keeps the details down, making The Wedding Dress a book to be recommended for both older and younger readers--anyone who is a true romantic at heart will be heaving sighs and wiping tears by the end. I highly recommend!

I reviewed this book for Thomas Nelson via Litfuse. It was not required that I give a positive review, but solely to express my own thoughts and opinions of this book, which I have done.

The Wedding Dress (Review)
By K. Hutson
A year ago, I crossed something off my bucket list.

I attended a writing workshop in Tulsa, Okla., led by Rachel Hauck.

It was a cool day, because I met a couple of neat writers, got some ideas (I'm really a non-fiction writer who dreams of writing a novel) and met Hauck.

Basically, I got to sit at her feet (OK, it was at a table in a church's meeting room), and listen to her talk writing and how she got lots of her ideas.

She also talked about writing a book a book about a wedding dress that fits four women - kind of a "traveling pants" meets romance and bridal wear.

Kind of a cool concept. (Although, I'm still waiting for the vampire Amish tale the workshop participants kept joking about.)

Well, fast forward - a year later, I had the opportunity to review The Wedding Dress - the book Hauck talked about in the workshop.

A book about four women - who all fit inside the dress WITHOUT alteration.

Spanning multiple generations, Hauck crafts a tale that unites a group of women - three still living - showing their common interests, ties and faith. She also weaves in a hint of mystery and intrigue (and a really interesting character wearing purple!).

It's a fun book. In the beginning the dialogue jumps back and forth between Charlotte and the original owner. We see similarities to their struggles for love and acceptance. As it continues, we meet the other two owners and see how they are all linked together by the dress and more.

Like other books I've read written by Hauck, the novel's characters are enjoyable and the plot captures your attention.

On the scale of one to five, I give this book a four.Fun and humorous, The Wedding Dress would make a great "tuck in your bag" on a vacation or "rainy day" read.

Four Great Stories in One
By Jamie
It seems like I'm practically gushing about each of the books I reviewed lately and this is no exception. Rachel Hauck's newest book tells the story of a wedding dress that is almost magical, finding its own way to brides that need it. The Wedding Dress 'takes the stories of each of the four women who have worn this magical dress and weaves them together in to an intriguing novel. As the stories of the dress and its wearers evolved I found myself more engaged in the story with each turn of the page. Hauck blends historical fiction, modern fiction and a bit of suspense into a story told so beautifully I didn't want the book to end. It's one of those stories that you wish was really true, a story so compelling that you long to be a part of it.

This is the first book I've read by Rachel Hauck and if her others are anything like this one, I think I'll be adding more of her books to my library.

Computers were first conceived as "thinking machines," but in the twenty-first century they have become social machines, online places where people meet friends, play games, and collaborate on projects. In this book, Judith Donath argues persuasively that for social media to become truly sociable media, we must design interfaces that reflect how we understand and respond to the social world. People and their actions are still harder to perceive online than face to face: interfaces are clunky, and we have less sense of other people's character and intentions, where they congregate, and what they do.

Donath presents new approaches to creating interfaces for social interaction. She addresses such topics as visualizing social landscapes, conversations, and networks; depicting identity with knowledge markers and interaction history; delineating public and private space; and bringing the online world's open sociability into the physical world. Donath asks fundamental questions about how we want to live online and offers thought-provoking designs that explore radically new ways of interacting and communicating.

"For anyone with interest in this field, either as a technology designer or just as someone who loves beautiful technology, this is destined to become the definitive text. It is eloquent, well organized, and thorough."  - Science

Judith Donath's thorough, in-depth look at social media is worthy of detailed, careful reading, but it also wonderfully supports opening at random, then reading and pondering. Want examples? Although interacting with people through technology is not as good as actually being with them, sometimes it can be better. What does it mean to be a stranger in the world of social media? "The stranger," she suggests, "may cease to exist." What do these observations mean for us as people and as a society? A book worthy of repeated reading, repeated pondering.

(Don Norman, author of The Design of Everyday Things, revised and expanded edition)

If you use social media and especially if you design social media, The Social Machine is a must-read. Judith Donath has spent years studying, building, and using online communication media and shares what she has learned in a readable, detailed, prescriptive book. The truth of her observations can be verified by looking at the media you use and the way you use it. Every user experience and user interface designer in particular should read The Social Machine to learn what they didn't teach in engineering school.

(Howard Rheingold, author of Net Smart)

Delightful, informative, and comprehensive, The Social Machine by Judith Donath provides a sumptuously illustrated overview of important design concepts for the design of mediated sociality. Donath's book will make you look at every social interface anew -- wondering what the design process was that produced it and why specific design choices were made. The text informs us but also invites us to engage with the ethics of choices that have been decided and that lie ahead of us. It will make you want to review your own history with social media and mediated interaction, evaluate and critique the current landscape, and imagine future possibilities. As we move into a world exploding with social media and with representations of us in data and in digital form, this is the book to read to understand the history and garner a foundation for thinking about the future.

(Elizabeth F. Churchill, Director of Human Computer Interaction, eBay Research Labs, and co-author of Foundations for Designing User-Centered Systems)

The Social Machine provides new insights gathered from decades of research and practice by artists and technologists in visualizing the social landscape. Drawing from her own pioneering work in making networks of human relationships visible at the group, institutional, and Internet scales, Donath succeeds in painting an unusually deep and personal portrait of the continually expanding universe of social media.

(John Maeda, Design Partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers)

For anyone with interest in this field, either as a technology designer or just as someone who loves beautiful technology, this is destined to become the definitive text. It is eloquent, well organized, and thorough...Those who share the author's principles of valuing beautiful and thought-provoking designs for their own sake will fall in love with this book. Those who are motivated to design platforms to generate profits or support analysis and decision-making will find value here, too, although they are unlikely to be completely won over by all of Donath's opinions on radical, creative design. Then again, this is a common characteristic of manifestoes. I don't expect Karl Marx planned to win over everyone with his manifesto, either.

A beautiful book, a key set of concepts, a veritable textbook for building better online spaces
By Ethan Zuckerman
(Disclosure - Judith Donath is an admired friend, and I have had the pleasure of talking to her about this book over the years she's worked to craft it.)

The internet allows us to interact with other people in ways that were previously impossible. We can be virtually present with people who are continents away, interact with groups larger than could fit in any room or carry out clandestine conversations in the midst of a public discussion. While these new forms of interaction of possible, they're not always comfortable - we are still learning how to take part in these digital spaces and designers are still learning how to build spaces we understand and navigate.

Judith Donath has been thinking about these problems since she was an undergraduate at MIT's Media Lab in the early 1990s, before the rise of the graphical Web. As a student and then a celebrated professor at the Media Lab, she worked on dozens of systems to visualize online social interactions and make visible subtle, but important, human dynamics like turn-taking in conversations. Her work, and the work of her students, has influenced the design of online community systems for the past two decades.

The Social Machine is both a tour through this work and the work of other designers of social media systems, as well as a set of principles for design of online spaces. Judith urges us to consider the "legibility" on online spaces, the challenges users have in understanding what's possible in these systems and how they should interact with them. This insistence on clarity and simplicity over innovation for innovation's sake characterizes the designs she showcases and serves as a critical principle for all designers of online interactions.

One of Donath's most important points is the need to move "beyond being there". She is critical of online spaces that slavishly recreate the details of physical spaces as a way of signifying how people should behave online - i.e., why create a virtual desk with chairs to signify a meeting room if there's no need to sit in the virtual space? (She's not a big fan of Second Life or other virtual realities that mimic the offline.) Freed from the design cliche of mimicking the physical world, Donath demonstrates that we can make visible other aspects of online communication, offering spaces for conversation and interaction that are richer than are available in physical space.

Concepts like "beyond being there" are the key reason for reading this book - Donath has thought through these ideas in great detail and used her insights to design innovative systems. These ways of approaching design problems will bear fruit for other designers and programmers, and the head start she offers in unpacking these complex problems is a gift for people just starting to ponder the implications of these spaces. The directions these insights can lead in is most visible in Donath's work on portraiture, considering the ways in which we construct portraits of ourselves and others based on data we share and suppress. In an examination that considers both the portrayal of characters in multiplayer online games to the beautiful artistic interventions Donath and collaborators have undertaken, she offers a language and set of concepts likely to be deeply helpful to anyone else exploring the space of profiles and online representation.

The Social Machine is a beautiful object - it is replete with illustrations of the projects Donath is reflection on, her own and those from the broader technical and artistic world. It's deeply satisfying to flip through, looking for provocation and inspiration. It's at least as rewarding for those who dig into the close examination Donath offers of her own work, the work of students, peers and of legendary artists, illustrating a set of concepts helpful for anyone who cares about the future of online spaces.

Warning: Not useful outside a university campus
By Harald Groven
If you are writing a thesis in media studies or sociology and need a reference to an updated work on the most current theories of social media, this book is probably perfect.
However if you are a practitioner building websites (like me) or a large (pro-/con-)sumer of social media, this books offer nothing but theories, theories and more theories. There is nearly no (new) empirical data. A lot of examples, many of the exiting, but half of them well known and possible worn out if you have read books in the same genre.

Fantastic book about social interface design - even for non-designers.
By Rey Junco
Donath (who is a colleague and friend) writes an engaging and wonderful book on how to design online social spaces. Donath inspired me to think about the difficulty in designing user interfaces that are innovative, legible, and socially beneficial. Donath begins the book by explaining how difficult it was to create a whois interface that made sense in the early days of networked computers. This thread is continued as a metaphor throughout-- how do we represent space, place, and person online? As a person who is not a designer (and quite far from it I may add), the examples and explanations throughout the book were incredibly vivid and easy to understand. Indeed, Donath excels here- bringing all audiences along the path of learning how we visualize things offline and how they can be represented online. Her explanations of interface design made me realize how difficult it is to develop and refine the social interfaces we take for granted today like Facebook and Twitter and how these designs have been shaped by their predecessors. Donath asks and astutely answers the question "How do online spaces accurately capture and represent the nuance and dynamics of the offline world?" There are wonderful examples throughout showing how humans use metaphors to think about time, space, and money and how metaphors can be applied in the social interface design process. She reminds us that there can be a lot of values inherent in interface design-- and one of the funnier examples was when she discusses how CERN scientists used Comic Sans in their presentation announcing the discovery of the Higgs boson. Was it an intentional design decision (probably not)? This book is a wonderful read for non-designers and designers alike and should be required reading for all graduate degrees in digital design.

Greenwich Village 1963: Avant-Garde Performance and the Effervescent Body, by Sally Banes

The year was 1963 and from Birmingham to Washington, D.C., from Vietnam to the Kremlin to the Berlin Wall, the world was in the throes of political upheaval and historic change. But that same year, in New York's Greenwich Village, another kind of history and a different sort of politics were being made. This was a political history that had nothing to do with states or governments or armies--and had everything to do with art. And this is the story that Sally Banes tells, a year in the life of American culture, a year that would change American life and culture forever. It was in 1963, as Banes's book shows us, that the Sixties really began.
A leading writer on cultural history, Banes draws a vibrant portrait of the artists and performers who gave the 1963 Village its exhilarating force, the avant-garde whose interweaving of public and private life, work and play, art and ordinary experience, began a wholesale reworking of the social and cultural fabric of America. Among these young artists were many who went on to become acknowledged masters in their fields, including Andy Warhol, John Cage, Yoko Ono, Yvonne Rainer, Lanford Wilson, Sam Shepard, Brian de Palma, Harvey Keitel, Kate Millet, and Claes Oldenburg. In live performance--Off-Off Broadway theater, Happenings, Fluxus, and dance--as well as in Pop Art and underground film, we see this generation of artists laying the groundwork for the explosion of the counterculture in the late 1960s and the emergence of postmodernism in the 1970s. Exploring themes of community, freedom, equality, the body, and the absolute, Banes shows us how the Sixties artists, though shaped by a culture of hope and optimism, helped to galvanize a culture of criticism and change. As 1963 came to define the Sixties, so this vivid account of the year will redefine a crucial generation in recent American history.

From Publishers Weekly
Despite the oblique subtitle, this is an engaging piece of cultural history and analysis. Banes ( Terpsichore in Sneakers: Post-Modern Dance ) declares 1963 a watershed year, the peak of the transition between the 1950s and 1960s. The avant-garde neighborhood of Greenwich Village produced "the first generation of postmodern artists," mixing vanguard and popular culture. Banes offers a genealogy of the neighborhood, then shows how art and arts institutions like the Living Theater helped reconstitute community there. Her approach is thematic: she explores avant-garde artists' appropriation of folkloric techniques and suggests that choreographers like Yvonne Rainer and artists like Andy Warhol mirrored the "equalizing impulse of the Sixties" in their work. She discusses the impact of growing racial consciousness on an art world in flux, and shows how American art became caught up in Cold War cultural competition with the Soviets. Most interesting is her analysis of how, during a time when American culture began to liberate the body, artists led the way with portrayals of the "effervescent body"--concerned with eating, excretion, birth and death. Review
"Sally Banes . . . has provided her readers with a sympathetic yet finely nuanced account of the artistic explorations of this avant-garde and of its attempts to interrogate the norms and values of the dominant culture."
--Leslie Fishbein," The Journal of American History"

From the Back Cover
This book does not aim to document comprehensively the extraordinarily rich activity in New York City in the early 1960's. Instead, the author focuses on one year, 1963. This was the most productive year of the period 1958-64, the transition between the Fifties and Sixties. The author also focuses on one other place---Greenwich Village in lower Manhattan. For it was primarily here, in a place already historically and culturally mythologized as avant-garde terrain, that the emerging generation of vanguard artists lived, worked, socialized, and remade the history of the avant-garde. - from the Introduction.

Community, Equality and Freedom
By Amazon Customer
In Sally Banes' historical look at the art scene in Greenwich Village in 1963 and 1964, one gets a dense book of information that covers the kind of art made, the creative processes involved, and the key players within this New York season of art. She chooses to look at dance (Judson Church), underground film, the Fluxus movement, Pop Art, and theater (Living Theater, Open Theater, LaMama, Cafe Chino). This all inclusiveness is beneficial in her points on this era's sense of community, equality, and freedom of expression.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I believe that it is chock full of historical knowledge that will benefit artists and art lovers alike. I do however wish that I could make my parents read it. That could be considered one downfall of this publication. It is interesting for me to read, as a choreographer, but it is lacking a sense of awareness for the non-artist. I also felt that Banes has an annoying writing trait of repeating herself.
I would recommend reading this book. It is a good introduction to the people and the era of the early sixties. The most interesting chapters were when Banes chose to contextualize and involve social and political facts/theories with what the artists motivations were. I particularly enjoyed the section covering LeRoi Jones (Baraka) and his plays.
It is interesting because we are still in the thick of post-modern art. Even though this book is a historical look back at New York's downtown, it points out common themes that are in the art world today. For example, feminist pedagogy, taking art from everyday life, community through art, and political art are concepts embraced by dancers, painters, actors, and independent film makers across America.

63 please oh please come back
By tyron crawleee
the coming together of once repressed forces-cagean chance, dada nihilism, artaudian viscerality surfacing as -performance/dance/music/writing/film fused alogically-much like the experiments at black mountain- 1963 may very well have been the culmination and dissolution ? of significant art in NYC. this is a well researched, symapathetic account of that period.
