2011 Reprint of 1930. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Adler left behind many theories and practices that very much influenced the world of psychiatry. Today these concepts are known as Adlerian psychology. His theories focused on the feelings of inferiority, and how each person tries to overcome such feelings by overcompensating (trying too hard to make up for what is lacking). Adler claimed that an individual's lifestyle becomes established by the age of four or five, and he stressed the importance of social forces, or the child's environment, on the development of behavior. He believed that each person is born with the ability to relate to other people and realize the importance of society as a whole. As a therapist, Adler was a teacher who focused on a patient's mental health, not sickness. Adler encouraged self-improvement by pinpointing the error in patients' lives and correcting it. He thought of himself as an enabler, one who guides the patient through "self-determination," so that the patients themselves can make changes and improve their state. Adler was a pioneer in that he was one of the first psychiatrists to use therapy in social work, the education of children, and in the treatment of criminals. The Science of Living is an intended to help the reader realize his potential.

About the Author
Adler was born in Vienna. He is a contemporary of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud and was a medical doctor. He moved to the United States in 1932.

Adler, the Eagle of Psychotherapy

I had to make a review after reading the inaccurate review posted here prior. Adler absolutely did not live in the "Victorian era", he lived in a different country (Vienna) during a time in which all things "Victorian" were being rejected. Although Adler began developing his own non-Freudian style of therapy, his real development was as a Austrian Army medical doctor. He treated soldiers in the eastern theater of that war, and later, children that were victims of the war. One may assume that this experience had much to do with his approach on therapy. Adler is still extremely relevant today. One of the reasons he is not so famous is that he was blacklisted by Freud and his loyal followers. By the time the world of psychotherapy had grown beyond Freud, new theories were being developed and many therapies really built on Adler's work than Freud, but because Freud had kept Adler's name from receiving so much recognition, new therapist's just labeled their ideas as "non-Freudian" instead of "Adlerian". Adler's concepts are used frequently, and I might add, effectively, however it is often under the name of newer therapy models. In my opinion, Adler should be the true father of modern psychotherapy, not Freud. This book "Science of Living" should be a mandatory library addition to anyone considering counseling or therapy. Some of the modern treatments used to for combat related PTSD can easily be found in many of the concepts that Adler discusses in his model, which is not too surprising if you look at his background.

Good source document

Alfred Adler is, I believe, one of the most influential yet under appreciated and under acknowledged thinkers in the field of psychotherapy. This book gives the reader some direct access to a few of Adler's papers. It does cover, at least briefly, Adler's main concepts, complete with case illustrations. While the entire field, including those of us who follow Adler's system of psychotherapy, has changed since the Victorian days in which Adler lived and wrote and worked, the cases still serve to illustrate how Adler himself applied his thought to real situations. This is a great resource for any student of Adler who wants to read what he had to say. The down side is, this is a collection of papers. Each chapter is actually a paper that originally was intended to stand alone, so you will not find a common thought developed from chapter to chapter. Even so, I readily recommend this book. When my students want to know more about Adler, this is one of the first resources I point them to.

This seminal work is recommended to students of psychology. The book covers Adler's notions in a manner that is reminiscent of his intent to make his work accessible to the lay person. It is a good read that espouses the principles of Individual Psychology in a clear manner.

About the Author

The author, Lucius Vitellius Triarius, aka Chip Hatcher, is a Graduate (cum Laude) in Political Science, focusing in Ancient Mediterranean Political Systems, from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and resides in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in Eastern Tennessee.

He is also a member of Nova Roma (www.novaroma.org), the global Roman Reconstruction project, advocating the via Romana, or Roman Way, where he serves as a Provincial Governor and Senator of Nova Roma.

The Roman Way is the study and practical application of "Romanitas" and the "mos maiorum", the revival of all aspects of Roman life, culture, virtues, ethics and philosophies in our everyday lives.

It is as part of the mos maiorum that citizens are expected to take up Roman names for use within the society. Learning Latin, the language of Roman culture, is also an equally important step towards becoming a modern Roman.

One of the cornerstones of Romanitas are the Roman virtues; those qualities which define the ideal state of being and behavior of the Roman citizen. These age old precepts guided the Roman Republic for centuries, and after being somewhat forgotten in the technology, hustle, and bustle of the modern age, are finding their way back into the hearts, minds, and homes of many people today. They are the foundation of a good and wholesome society, and should be consistently used to further advance the knowledge, behavior and ethics of our children and succeeding generations.

He believes that we must remember and preserve the good parts of the past in the present, so that others will remember it in the future.

A god upon a great white throne, with cherubim and seraphim bowing before him, may have power and dignity, but for comfort and good-fellowship one must go to the god who sits by the fire, inhales the odor of spice, and the flavor of the bread and the cake and the meat that are cooking in the kitchen. Such a god can understand the tribulations of the cook and the annoyances of the mistress; he knows by experience that fire burns and ginger is hot in the mouth. All other religion is cold and formal beside this intimate religion of the hearth.

Only buy if you /must/ have a book

It was alright. Like the review said before, I was disappointed when I opened the book and found most information was copy to copy from the Nova Roma site. Has some helpful insights even so and there's some information you will not find anywhere else. Honestly, I'd only get it if it conveniences you to have a physical book of the information regarding Religio Romana.

The information was meant to be public domain in the interest of sharing knowledge of the Roman Religion. It was not meant to be for profit by a not for profit organization. This book is CRAMMED with information! I especially like that at the bottom of the page it has a picture that has an outline of a human standing next to an outline of the dinosaur being described to show size. It really helps hammer home the sizes of the dinosaurs.

My son (13) and I went on a dinosaur dig this last summer. I asked the a professor and some of the regulars on the dig what they would recommend as a book for my son. They all agreed that this was one of the best. It also helped identifying some of the bones we were finding! I really hope they reprint and update this book with the new information that is available, it is a real treasure.

It is a shame that this book is not available now. Although it was written in 1988 and thus it is not up-to-date with the discoveries of the past 12 years this book is still an amazing read. What is written in it is still valid and gives readers a fascinating visual tour of the long-disappeared world. I hope there will be a reprint and maybe also an addendum focusing on new discoveries.

Beautifully told literary classic.

This story is a very beautifully told literary classic. The intimate proximatey of such a well developed character is truly amazing. White tells a wonderful sotry of a gay boy growing up in the 50's--though he never truly accepts it; not until the second book of the series, anyhow.
Warnings: Many people reviewed this book negatively and I wish to use this space to share who will NOT enjoy this book. First of all, you must enjoy the "literary" style of writing; if you don't enjoy classics and works by the likes of John Irving than this is not for you. A fine example is to compare it to J.D. Salenger's "Catcher in the Rye"--if you read this in your schooling years and hated it, you'll probably hate this also. If you like a solid and clear course of plot you may not enjoy it; this book is written much like life is lived, and that is with a degree of chaos. Also, if you are homophonic, this book is obviously not for you unless you are attempting to open your mind. Finally, if you are the type of person who is offended by the unappologetic beliefs of the 50's that homosexuality is an illness, etc., then you may not want to read this; this was an issue with me, but I came to understand that this would be the thought process of someone in the narrators posision at his age and time.
I loved this book, and hope that other readers will expierience the same amazement as I did.

An enduring masterwork

Edmund White is one of America's finest writers. From his early forays into a then edgey genre of stories that happen to include in depth studies of gay men and their questionable place in the public fabric to his current biographies of famous writers (Proust, et al) to his assessment in literary form of the AIDS crisis and it effect on life in all of America, White has become ever more erudite, polished in technique, and fascinating to explore. Because of this current prominence among gifted writers it is rewarding to return to the early works and see if they contained all the seeds of his success. Having just re-read "A Boy's Own Story" I am even more deeply moved and impressed with White than I remembered. This treasureable book is not just a Pink Triangle groupie read. This is wondrously beautiful writing by all standards. White knows how to make the English linguage sing with acute observations that begin with a keen delineation of line but then blossom fully into metaphors than can only be called poems. These descriptions apply not only to walks in nature or observed qualities of light at varying times of day, but they are used to define his characters in such a vivid manner that they literally step off the page, indelibly.
And the story.....this tale of the grappling of a youth over questions not only of sexuality but of coming of age in social, religious, educational, dream vs reality strikes chords in all of us. His unnamed narrator is in a way the Everyman of Youth. White does not go for the happy Hollywood ending: he writes about the truths of decisions gone awry, dreams dismemebered, realites coming into being. I would hope that "A Boy's Own Story" would be part of the required reading list for the liberal arts schools who care about not only quality of literature but also of complexity of becoming an adult.

In the beginning....

Edmund White's brand of prose is top-shelf. From page one of this novel, his first loosely autobiographical piece about growing up gay, I was bewitched, bothered, and bewildered by him once again.
I have now read his first-person narrative trilogy in full, though out of sequence, and each book is captivating. While this, his early adolescence, is not as sexually charged as the others, it is still replete with the same auto-erotica that emanates from his fertile imagination in the subsequent pieces of the work as a whole.
The protagonist, still unnamed, draws readers into his world of summers at the lake with his well-off family; his first tentative sexual liaisons; his forays into the world of heterosexual 'normalcy', his escape from parochial school to the comforts of an all-boys private academy, and his reluctant quest to discover his homosexual self. Through the pages of this novel, the boy takes diffident steps out of the closet, even in the 1950's, when such actions were decidedly more taboo than in present day, yet White's experience can be understood by all who have come out, whether it were 1955, 1985, or 2002.
White takes his narrator, and the reader, through the highs and lows of self doubt and self awareness; through numerous quests for love and acceptance; through the dangers and disappointments of trying to conceal your true nature from the world and yourself, and finally through the daunting labors of disclosure of his homosexual tendencies to others. In the finale, the protagonist arrives, albeit in a disturbing way, at childhood's end, and forges ahead toward adulthood.
Ever present are White's frank, revealing takes on being gay. No matter what your age; no matter what the year, White's voice speaks to all. His trilogy of growing up gay in the 50's and 60's and being gay in the 70's, 80's, and beyond is among the finest examples of gay literature I have ever read.

Good story, despite poor editing!

It's a strong story, set in a historical setting that is soundly researched and beautifully described; especially the minor details regarding countryside, military equipment, clothing, etc. Battle scenes are stirringly presented with all the action followers of the 'historical military fiction' genre could possibly want.
The central character here is a good one, a prince set amongst a slave revolt & forced to come to terms with treating 'these people' as equals. His inner turmoil in this respect is extremely interesting. Indeed most of the central characters are well presented, showing strength, resolve, but with all kinds of human frailties in their personas.
The Spartacus slave rebellion is sparsely recorded by historians, probably because the victors (who wrote the history) came out of this episode with little, or no glory. However, the story follows the known course of events faithfully & I found the narrative credible.
A great read, highly recommended!
So... why not 5 stars?
The same old problem that I have experienced in most of my Kindle books; lousy editing! Surely the authors used proof-readers somewhere down the line; in which case there must be a strong case for a legal suit against these morons. The whole book is littered with spelling mistakes and typos. It is a testament to the quality of the story, and the authors writing skills, that I persevered to the end of the book. I sincerely hope that this issue of poor editing, typos, etc. in Kindle presentations is being addressed generally (come on Amazon, you should be pushing for this!) somewhere because my whole kindle experience is being ruined bacause of it.

I really enjoyed The Parthian by Peter Darman. I love historical action-epics and this is a rip-roaring adventure, with a cast of well-drawn characters and a sweeping story that draws you in and makes you want to find out what happens next. Its the story of Pacorus, Prince of Parthia, and his ongoing war with the Roman Empire. There are plenty of well-executed battle sequences, convincing dialogue and characters, a plot that moves on very quickly and an astonishing wealth of fascinating detail about life - and especially warfare - in the Ancient World. As I was reading it, I was thinking that this would make a fantastic TV mini-series. Really hope there will be more where this came from. Highly recommended.

Experience with Technology provides some missing DNA to the world of HCI. I am impressed with how Dr. al-Azzawi brings in literatures that are often neglected by mainline user researchers, e.g. social theory, categorization, and brand. He does so in a thoughtful and compelling manner. The scholarship is thorough and top-notch, especially in the synthesis of it all in his ICE model. This book straddles the line that is often hard to manage; it serves as a solid foundation for academic coursework as well as an impetus for practical application of theory.  In it all, his writing is lucid and pithy; there is not a wasted word. I strongly recommend this to HCI practitioners who believe there is nothing new in the field. There is, and it is within the pages of this book.

Daniel Boorstin writes like a librarian

Daniel Boorstin writes like a librarian. He has a clarity of vision about the claims of those around him and in the materials that claim a place in the archives and stacks of the crucial institutions he knew so well. And he called it like he saw it. Journalism, in his view, was a power in the ongoing cultural life of the United States that was part truth, part fiction. It was predictable in its approaches, limited in its ability to find and report facts, and was subject to the whims of political, economic and social power. It was a messenger of good in a landscape of evil. And its life was hard. This is a must-read for anyone who loves the press. It's must-reading also for press-haters. And it's the kind of read that will make you think perhaps as never before about the importance of the press in a society prone to being enamored with itself and its pleasant fictions.
