Readers are spared the author's raspy voice in this examination of the lost years of Jesus and his "mystical life." Browne makes considerable effort to keep minds open and religious formalists unoffended. Much of the content is conveyed by and confirmed by Browne's spirit guide, Francine, a factor that may deter some readers. But the interesting data she presents makes this a fascinating listen that addresses the questions of whether Christ really died on the cross, married, had children; hypothesizes on what he did in his "missing years," and corrects what seem to be errors, intentional or not, in the Gospels. Amazing and well told story of Yeshua's Life Details

I am so very glad that Sylvia's publisher encouraged her to write this book, because most of us Christians are fascinated by the life of Yeshua and those surrounding him, including Mother Mary, and especially Mary Magdelene, two individuals that we know very little about from the Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke-Acts and John. Her book goes to great detail and length to explain the role of Mother God in the life of Yeshua, and how he came to die on the cross in an interesting and refreshing style. It also clearly explains the split in the church between the Jewish Christians, the Gnostic Christians and the Pauline Christians and the differences in philosophy in an interesting manner. I loved the book and could not put it down. I started it at 10 pm and had to finish it in the next four hours, which is possible because her writing style is interesting, exciting and clear--not difficult or scholarly.

In any case the one thing which she did not explain well, and I see it in many comments on reviews of her book on Amazon, is that people are concerned that Mother God is not mentioned in the bible, but this is not entirely accurate. She is, because the most popular name for God in the bible is "Elohim", mentioned some 2500 times, and it is derived from "Eloah" meaning Goddess with a masculine ending. The article used before it is gendered fe/male plural, with Hebrew being a gendered language, unlike English. Another word for god is "El Shaddai" which means the "mighty breasted one" and is gendered female. She forgot to mention this, so I thought this might help everyone better understand where the Mother God in her book comes from, or at least according to the bible. The unfortunate thing about this language interpretation, is only few biblical and intellectual scholar are aware of this, with the bulk of translations of the bible having been done by promoters of a patriarchal religion, which Sylvia does mention quite frequently in her book, but perhaps not always as completely as she should.

In any case, the details of the life of Yeshua and the holy women are amazing and it explains the strong existence of the Cathars in France for many decades in early Christianity.

Sylvia has once again, done a wonderful and credible job in promoting a loving, caring and nurturing Mother and Father God in this book who assisted and supported a Messiah throughout a long and notable life.

The book expands upon other books such as the Tomb of God and the Da Vinci code, which it is not incompatible with. These are also books I would highly recommend on this subject with the exception that the Tomb of God is much more scholarly and drier than reading Sylvia Browne. Another good series that is similar to the content of this book are the Essene Gospels of Jesus by Dr. Szekeley and Edgar Cayce's book on Jesus, which again, reaffirm the statements made by Slyvia in this book.

She also states in her book that much more archeological evidence will be uncovered in the next few years that will more clearly establish the fact that Yeshua survived the crucifixion, lived to have children, and Mary Magdelene was in fact instrumental in spreading his work and gospels.

I highly recommend the book if you are at all interested in the details of the life of Yeshua and those of the holy women who stayed with him and supported him throughout his mission work here on earth.

An interesting and informative graphic novel about the legendary Japanese tale of "The 47 Ronin."

I read the Japanese story bout the legendary 47 Ronin (Masterless Samurai) many years ago but thought reading this graphic novel about this historical tale would be interesting to explore once again. I was not disappointed. The story is a familiar one and anyone who has read anything about Japanese history has heard this tale about how 47 Samurai avenge the death of their master, Lord Asano.

After Lord Asano had to commit seppuku (Ritual Japanese Suicide), because he struck (but did not kill) an evil, ignorant and impolite official named Lord Kira, in another Lord's castle, his Samurai decided upon revenge but they devised a secret plan so that no one would be suspicious of their true goal and objective. Each Ronin (A Masterless Samurai) completely changed their personality, some becoming drunks, some pretending to be peasants and others pretending to be garden workers. Some of these Ronin were even able to work on the grounds and inside the castle where Lord Kira lived.

Finally after two years the 47 Samurai put their plan into action and were able to avenge the death of their master. In the end to show they were indeed men of honor and followed the code of Bushido (Way of the warrior), all 47 Samurai committed seppuku. Even if you have already read the original book this graphic novel version really makes the story come alive. If you like graphic novels and Japanese Bushido (Way of the warrior) tales, you should check out this book.

This is a masterpiece of warrior philosophy. It is not a casual read and nor is it a story that will provide entertainment value. This is essential reading for martial artists and practitioners of eastern medicine as one of the fundamental lessons involves the cultivation of Qi. The "Demon" in this case refers to the Tengu, which are legendary throughout Japan.

The Tengu is many things and comes in many forms. It is known as a mischievous and malevolent spirit that brought terror to the Japanese. The ninja made use of these legends and often impersonated Tengu to strike fear. But the Tengu is also a respected and revered symbol and is associated with Shugendo, or the Way of the Aesthetic. In this role the Tengu can be a teacher, and a protector of Buddhism who punsihed evil-doers.

Practitioners of Shugendo often live alone in the mountains and are known as Yamabushi (Shinto), meaning "Mountain (Yama) Warrior (Bushi) Aesthetic" in the deeper sense. They view nature as possessing powerful Qi; in the mountains, rocks, and streams. In the wilderness they train and cultivate their energy. Their ancient roots come from China and the Taoist traditions, which is very evident in this book:

"The Demon said, 'The Way cannot be seen or heard. What can be seen or heard are just traces of the Way.'

The Tengu, the Yamabushi, and the ninja are all connected. Togakushi is a small village high in the Japanese alps that claims a ninja heritage that is 900-years old. There are 3 shinto shrines in the valley, and countless sacred spots throughout the mountains, which have many small waterfalls and streams. The Tengu of Togakushi takes the form of a raven. Tengu are also common in many other ninja villages like Yagyu-zato.

What's incredible about this book is its really the only one on this subject in english. While sitting high on a precipice in the mountains above Togakushi, I watched a raven high above tuck its wings into a steep dive and it sounded like a katana slicing the air as it passed 15-feet away before continuing another 1000-feet down and leveling off just over the tree line. It was an odd display and there was something really powerful about it. That spirit is alive in this book, and it sheds light on where these ideas originated.

The Tengu are also high techers, but only to the select few. They often took a keen interest in people who retreated to the mountains for extended training. Morihei Ueshiba, the Aikido founder learned some of his martial arts from a Tengu in the 1920's. Sword master Yagyu Muneyoshi had an epic sword duel with a Tengu during a violent lightning storm in the mountains above the village. There is rock there where supposedly his sword cut through the stone after the Tengu dodged him that is now known as Itto Seki, or "one sword stroke rock".

This book deals a lot with the movement of a warrior, but perhaps a more powerful message relates to the Shugendo concepts or more specifically the cultivation of Qi. This was fundamental to the ancient Taoist masters who created powerful martial arts such as the highly advanced Ba Gua Zhang. Chozanshi is clearly advocating that we work endlessly to cultivate Qi, and through this process both our lives and our practices will excel.

This book is a rare treat. It offers some very advanced material, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a serious practitioner of the arts. Be prepared to study.

Deep and cryptic

The Demon's Sermon comes from Japan's 17th century. Author Niwa Jurozaemon Tadaaki (writing as Issao Chozanshi) created this work on martial arts, despite a claim after the Sermon that "I am not a swordsman, so how could I teach swordsmanship?" If that is truly the author speaking, then what else in these essays should be discounted as suspect in their accuracy? And, if it's self-deprecating fiction, then what other points in these essays should also discounted as fiction? This, I think, is the least of the paradoxes within this text.

The text carries a Taoist tone, with many allusions to Taoist classics. Educated Japanese in many centuries referred often to the Chinese canon. Chozanshi's work, however, stands out for building up Chinese concepts in terms of Chinese classics, building them on a base of Japanese martial arts, folk culture, and religion. This sermon on martial arts in fact says very little about those arts - instead, it cultivates the mind, spirit, and human energy of the martial artist. The third essay in this set scarcely addresses martial arts at all. Instead, the amusing parable follows an exchange between cats on the conquest of an uncommonly fierce rat. If just a word here and there were changed, the fable would have sounded like an actual part of the Chuang Tzu.

Wilson's translation is modern and fluent. His preface and footnotes clarify many cultural referents that could otherwise have been obscure, especially regarding the demon speaker himself. Despite skilled translation, the Way of Chozanshi's text remains obscure - as if to remind a reader of any century that the Way that can be spoken is not the eternal Way.

My time with the Blackbirds.

In its genre, this book and the trilogy it is part of is riveting. M.M.Gavillet masters the art of suspense and the reader cannot put the book down. (the Kindle in my case). Every page keeps you hanging onto the next page and you cannot anticipate where it will go next. The seemingly improbable becomes reality and takes you on a trip into a world our protagonist from sleepy St.Francisville could never imagine. Emily and her friends jump on a magical journey fraught with danger and take you with them. I hope M.M. writes more.

Thinley Norbu Rinpoche is a preeminent teacher in the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. The eldest son of His Holiness D üdjom Rinpoche, he is a primary holder of the D üdjom Tersar lineage and is considered to be an emanation of Longchenpa, the great fourteenth-century Nyingma master.

A trip.

This is an interesting one. Written in a very unique voice, with a distict sense that many of the words in this book were made-up solely for this book, and may never be used again. The author is one of the sons of the late Dudjom Rinpoche, a massive figure in modern nyingma. Thinley Norbu does much here to break-up some of the notions the reader may have about spirituality, and does it in an almost psychedelic way, what with the plethora of... how to say, -he talks to you directly, from what seems a very spacious and conscious (read: realized?) perspective. Very personal, this book. I think a generous gift from a low-profile but highly developed teacher. Interested?

This tuely is a Magic Dance!

I found this book to be both delightful and challenging. I am in agreement with several other reviewers that Thinley Norbu has a compassionate teacher's command of English. He knows as a dharma teacher just how difficult the concepts that he speaks of are to grasp, even when taught in his native Tibetan, a language specifically tailored to the explanation of Buddhist philosophical concepts.

The difficulty of explaining these concepts in English, a language that does not have words to distinguish between many subtle mental phenomena are always a challenge for Buddhist teachers. The main topic of this book, the Buddhist view on the five elements, earth, water, air, fire and space are illustrative of the difficulties in translation. Calling these things elements, in English means they are like carbon or hydrogen. The might also be called qualities like solid or liquid, or principles like animate or inanimate, pathways like multiple or unitary, etc. The Buddhist term for them, "Wisdom Dakinis" contains all of these meanings and many more.

You will find if you give this text your full attention, reading and re-reading it with the receptive mind that it requires; that the Rinpoche has opened various cracks in your preconceptions of the nature of reality. If you contemplate the concepts that he has exposed, resting your mental weight on them, you will find that you gain new insight of the energy essences that "appear" the ordinary world. This process is called penetration though more often it feel like free fall, as the solid floor of ordinary conception breaks under you.

A simple review like this can do little to capture this experience. I would encourage anyone interested Buddhist natural philosophy to take a sip from this cup and then enjoy the fall!

This is one of my favorite Dharma books, one I find myself re-reading and sitting with, again & again. It's kind of like eating a meal. Each time I taste this book, I discover flavors I hadn't experienced before. This book is a mystery I continue to explore.

About the Author

David Kassel is the principal of Accountable Strategies Consulting, LLC, a research, analysis, and management consulting firm for organizations in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. He was formerly chief of the management division of the Massachusetts Office of the Inspector General and prior to that was a senior research analyst with the Post Audit and Oversight Committee Bureau of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He has also previously worked as a State House reporter for daily newspapers in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Transition from private Sector clients to public sector clients - a Structural Engineers view.

I worked as a project structural engineer for 22-years designing buildings and equipment foundations for pulp and paper clients. In 1985 I changed jobs and spent the next 18-years designing buildings and heavy equipment foundations for water and wastewater facilities. In addition I was involved with designing some heavy foundations and buildings in cold climates for military clients.

For 22-years I had worked for private clients who along with the consultant engineering firm could set the number of contractors who would be allowed to submit proposals for a project; prepurchase pumps, and other equipment that the clients wanted to be the same at a project site. Now in 1985 I started working for public sector clients and all the project management and design information was different.

Now my client did not have a personal list of bidders and I did not have the ability to design foundations and clearances around a specific certified piece of equipment.

Taking a continuing education course in 1985 about managing public projects and the use of David S. Kassel's book would have been very helpful during this transition.

I recommend that all engineers who have to make a similiar transition today should read Kassel's book and engineering societies and organizations that teach courses for professional engineers to earn continuing engineering units, CEU, use Kassel's book as the text book for a course on this subject.

Informative and entertaining view of public project management

There are hundreds -- maybe thousands -- of project management books available from Amazon, but comparatively few that address the unique challenges of managing projects in the public sector. This book provides valuable guidance for public administrators seeking to successfully manage taxpayer-funded projects.

The author's experience as an investigative journalist and audit report writer is evident in a series of well written vignettes explaining in painstaking detail the neglected or poorly implemented public project management techniques on several failed public projects. This approach is both effective at illustrating the project management concepts, and -- at times -- quite entertaining.

I highly recommend this book.

Hi, I’m Alyssa, and not long ago, I became tired of being fat.

Searching online for “before and after” pictures to inspire me, I found the tumblr thinspo community. There I started my own blog, sweetthinspiration.tumblr.com, and started talking about my struggles and successes in the weight loss war.

Before long, messages started coming in from people to whom weight loss suddenly made sense, from people relieved they no longer needed to starve and purge, and from people who just needed an extra dose of inspiration to keep going. When a huge number of the people writing those messages used words like “finally,” “changed my life,” and “saved me,” I realized that mine wasn’t just another blog. When people started telling me things like that they had printed out my writings to keep copies with them throughout the day, or that they wanted to wallpaper their room with pages of them, and that I should write a book, I started to wonder if maybe this was meant to be more than just about me.

The Real You is Skinny is my way of saying thank you to everyone who inspired me to lose the weight and who helped me meet the real me.

It is also, I hope, just what you have been looking for.

After reading a million diet books, this one is the beacon of light!

I can say with absolute certainty that this book changed my life, It's something I'm going to keep forever, and reread over and over again for motivation and a voice of reason and sanity in a country of excess that's gone nuts, telling people whatever they want to hear just to sell a book or program or magazine. "Eat all the ______ you want and lose weight!" Almost every book put out in the last ten years has the tagline "Lose weight without counting calories!" I have read hundreds of these books and articles, and in the last few years after putting on excess weight, I've tried a bunch of them...among them Paleo, Sugar-Free, Blood Type (lots of meat), Eat-To-Live (no meat), even (regretfully) Intermittent Fasting. I was trying to avoid paying to join Weight Watchers (which is basically a calorie counting program, just disguised as "points", and ironically the top-ranking program that actually works), but the one time in my adult life when I got beautifully and perfectly skinny and fit and maintained it for a few years was with Weight Watchers and regular exercise. What spoke to me so deeply about Alyssa's book was not only hers being a real story of transformation, but it REMINDED me of MY OWN transformation, many years back on Weight Watchers. It is EXACTLY the mental process I went through to be thin and maintain thin, where I also was able to maintain freedom of choice and total confidence, just like Alyssa. Through all this diet-book noise and my own desperation, I had totally forgotten what is was like to actually DO IT and with GREAT SUCCESS. Now, thanks to Alyssa, I remember vividly and know now how to use my own strength to get back there! NO MORE wacky diets or theories!! They just don't work in the real world!! Maybe if you were single, without kids, stayed at home, and had no friends and relatives, in a perfect vacuum you could maintain a prescribed "Sugar-Free" or "All Plant Life" diet. But Alyssa's method- relying on YOURSELF to make the proper decisions about what and when to eat, no matter where, when, with who, with whatever kind of food availability or situation you find yourself in, is truly the only one that works long term, just as it did with me in the past! ( I lost my equilibrium with a new husband, new job, new baby etc. , but now I'm ECSTATIC to get it back.)
I'd like to say "Kudos!" to Alyssa for being brave enough to tell her story, amid all the controversy in our country about weight loss and body love. We have reached a whole new level of hypocrisy in our culture at the moment, and the witch hunt is on for anybody that tells people that being overweight is their own fault and they are the only ones to have any power to change it, We as a culture have been babied ( or "sold") into the idea that it's not our fault if we are overweight- there are a million other places to place blame, from pesticides to ad agencies to even the government. We've also been sold the idea that's its not fair that we can't eat whatever we want and still be healthy and beautiful- it's just not fair! Hence, all the programs out there telling you to eat all you want and still lose weight without counting calories!!! Which, commonsense tells us, if that were all true, our obesity problem would be pretty much solved. But it isn't, so what does that tell us? Alyssa hit the nail on the head with her revelation, and mine too, from when I was skinny, that- skinny is HARD. It's HARD WORK. Which is a WICKEDLY unpopular, if not downright offensive, statement in our culture right now.
Even in Denise Austin's last book I read, Side Effect-Skinny, I noticed that Denise's usually positive, encouraging voice sounded almost exasperated when writing- (Yes, it's about the CALORIES! It's about PORTION CONTROL! It's about NUTRITION!) Even Denise sounded annoyed when writing, trying to explain to people that no, you cannot do whatever you want and have a fit and healthy body! Commonsense is disappearing rapidly amid all our commercialism. To anybody who thinks Alyssa is promoting disordered eating, they did not read the book. She makes clear the distinctions of calorie counting and eating disorders, and emphasizes throughout the book the importance of nutrition. Anyone who missed those points has been sold the idea of "We should be able to eat however we want to and still be healthy!" When I was at my skinniest, I consumed way more nutrients from whole foods in a 1200 calorie day than any of my coworkers did, downing 2000++ calories of processed junk and take out/fast food. Do a full medical workup on us, and the ones eating the American way of "However I want" will have way worse health scores than those who are responsibly eating highly nutritious food within a safe calorie count. This book DOES NOT PROMOTE EATING DISORDERS.
Also-I really enjoyed Alyssa's writing style and the layout of the book-she flip-flops between personal journal entries and chapters of info, it made the book completely engaging and fun to read. I would love to read a sequel- a book on long-term maintenance and dealing with life changes? That's where I ( and I suspect a lot of women) have struggled. It would be really helpful!
I have never left a review this long- but after reading a million other diet books, I just wanted to give high remarks for a well written and enlightening book and come to the author's defense!

A True Journey

There are so many challenges that come with losing weight- during and after even the weight is gone. Weight loss requires discipline and mental well-being- Alyssa's emotional journey as well as her methods are all beneficial to me as I continue to lose weight. But what's MOST amazing is how her methods worked for me. The weight just started dropping off when I started listening to her. I lost about 10 pounds since I read this a month ago! :) I used to listen to what all the personal trainers said- I mean, they were the ones I thought knew everything. But little did I know they were wrong! For about 6 months, I was working out everyday for an hour and a half and eating everything they told me, aimed for 65g protein, yadda yadda yadda... but my weight wasn't going down much. And I wasn't looking that different. I even thought I needed to do two hours a day. And then BAM! Listened to Alyssa and I even cut back on exercising a lot (still did though, more like an hour every other day), and I still lost more weight than ever beforehand. I"M SO GLAD I read it! So I just want to say THANK YOU to Alyssa for that. With this book, I also FINALLY have the knowledge of knowing I can be thin for the rest of my life! I never thought I would ever say that. I can be thin forever. Because her combination of intuitive/disciplined eating and exercise just works.

People told me when I was at my heaviest, about 15 pounds heavier, You're fat, they would say. Or you're big boned. Or it's genetic. And they would judge me and give me looks. But definitely made me feel like there was nothing I can do about it. When I lost weight and was at my happiest weight, thin and very toned, and healthy! The same people- they went beserk. You're too thin! You look gross! You're awful! Look at you, eating only vegetables! Are you crazy!? Meanwhile, it was the only time I was just at a completely normal weight. I looked totally fine. I realize that NOW- two years later, when I look back at pictures. But then, they had made me feel like something was wrong with me. They made me feel worse than when I was fat! They made me feel BAD about my weight loss because it intimidated them, and I let their negativity affect me. She addresses these issues in her book amongst many more! (Another thing: I also realized I was using similar methods to what Alyssa did when I was maintaining that size.)

What I noticed: how Alyssa loses weight is how most celebrities (But don't admit it) and many people lose weight and keep it off. Its a lifestyle change! And she also explains her reasoning for all her choices in method, busts many myths, and the whole nature of becoming a skinny person- in way you can maintain forever. Just read it. It all makes sense. It's so simple. Not that it won't be a challenge. But really- it's a simple method.

Seeing the real me come out from underneath the unnecessary pounds has been amazing.

A story of weight loss, not a template

After being a longtime follower of "sweetthinspiration" on Tumblr, I thought I'd read the book for myself to see where all of the "pro-ana" critiques were coming from. From the very beginning, the author makes it clear that she is not a registered dietitian, doctor, personal trainer, or any variation of the above; she is simply a young woman who became tired of feeling "fat," and decided to make a change in her life. The book is a narrative; not a diet plan or a template for weight loss. It chronicles the struggles people in all weight categories face-- i.e., prejudices for being too skinny or overweight, the difficulty of staying motivated, the perils of being "social" without completely losing sight of an end goal--and offers the story of how one individual learned to cope with and overcome these triggers we all face.

Although I don't necessarily agree with some of her methods,I appreciate that the author depicted her personal struggle of weight loss, and that it is HARD work and can't be attained through gimmicks, special foods or weight loss supplements. If you are looking for a book that gives you a complete "guide to skinny," this is probably not for you. However, if you are looking for a success story, tips on how to overcome societal pressures, an honest look into the difficulty of losing weight, or anecdotes on the euphoric feeling that results from accomplishing(previously unattainable) goals throughout the weight loss process, then look no further.
