The story that began in Article 5 (2012) continues here as 17-year-old Ember and her boyfriend, former Moral Militia soldier Chase, try to outrun the Federal Bureau of Reformation (FBR). And run and run. There is so much running—including when the duo becomes part of the Resistance—that the choppy story never manages to quite coalesce. Even those who like action might find what’s here a little hard to follow. Still, this has some good character development as Ember and Chase attempt to become closer to each other, in spite of the fact that there is still so much bad history between them. When the character of Tucker, the soldier who killed Ember’s mother, is reintroduced, there’s plenty of opportunity for skepticism as he tries to prove to Ember and Chase that he is not the wind-up soldier he once was. Simmons has put a lot of heart into her characters, so readers will want to follow them to the next book. But the momentum seems to be with the FBR. Watch out, guys. Grades 7-12, --Ilene Cooper

A Dystopian Society Like No Other!

While I was somewhat iffy on the first book in this series, "Article 5" (primarily because of Ember), I did find this to be a vast improvement (it's clear that Kristen is growing tremendously as an author)- however, it's not without its faults. Personally I feel that this book suffers from "second book syndrome", to a degree. After finishing it and sitting back to consider it I found myself thinking, "That's it? All that this story centered around was trying to rescue Rebecca?" I just don't think that it was as near epic than it should have been/ there was really only one basic story line (especially when taking into consideration that there were SO many other elements that could have been added- I mean, they are living in an essentially war torn dictatorship where every single one of their actions is monitored, not unlike that of "The Hunger Games" or "Matched").
That being said, the dystopian world that Kristen has concocted is one of the best I have ever read of before (and I consider myself to be somewhat of a post-apocalyptic/ dystopian connoisseur, almost everything that I read in 2012 falling within the two genres). Her world building is second to none and I think that many authors of this genre could learn a lesson or two from her (there is an actual back story, folks!).
Furthermore, I loved that there was actual growth- in both the characters and in relationships. While Ember was somewhat whiny and nerve-grating in "Article 5" in this book she understood what was at stake and she stepped up to the plate, doing what no one else was able to. While Ember and Chase's relationship didn't play a massive role, I savored every moment that it did. Their relationship was one of the most mature and least superficial that I can ever recall reading in a YA before.
All in all, I think that there was an even balance between things that I enjoyed in this novel and things that I didn't quite so much- regardless, I am quite looking forward to the next, and final, installment of this series, "Glass Arrow"!

A Thrill-Ride Of A Scecond Book!

BREAKING POINT is another hit from Kristen Simmons! Seriously, it was phenomenal! BREAKING POINT delivered everything I hoped it would! Through out this entire book my heart was pounding, my hands were shaking, and my fingers were turning the pages faster then I could read them! I just HAD to know what was coming next! I couldn't get enough of BREAKING POINT, and when I was finished I was ready to dive right back into this world with THREE! It just that good!
THE PLOT...
BREAKING POINT picks up where ARTICLE 5 left off, with Ember and Chase declared dead by the Federal Bureau of Reformation's. The new government that has taken the Bill of Rights from citizens and created the Moral Statutes, where no one has any rights that the FBR has not given them. They are cruel and ruthless, and will kill thousands of innocents if that's what needs to be done to keep the control!
But there are the ones that are fighting back. The ones who have had enough of their cruelty, and murder, and are not standing for it anymore! The ones that will save them all from Federal Bureau of Reformation's! The Resistance!
Ember and Chase are among the resistance, just trying to survive and stay off the FBR's radar. And it's been fairly easy with the distraction from the sniper picking off guards left and right! That is until Ember's faked death is revealed, and she is put back in the spotlight. But this time it's worse then it's ever been! They've marked her as 1 of the 5 conspirators to the sniper, but that's not all, there's a kill on sight order! If they even think it's Ember, then they have the order to shoot first and ask questions later. Ember just singed the death warrant of any girls that might look like her! And that's a heavy weight to bare!
Ember has voweled to write the wrongs she has done when she was in the rehabilitation center, when her friend Rebecca was beat by the guards and sent to another rehabilitation center, because of her...
Sean, the boy she blackmailed to help break her out of the rehabilitation center, and Rebecca's boyfriend has become like family, and he his determined to get Rebecca back. Ember knows without her none of this would of happened to them. So Ember, Chase, Sean, and a unexpected and VERY unlikely "Allie" will fight their way through the resistance, FBR, and any citizens that get in their way in finding Rebecca and making it to the safe house alive!
But it won't be easy, and what happens when they find her? They still have to keep fighting! It's not over, it never will be! Not until the Federal Bureau of Reformation's is destroyed...FOR GOOD!
Wow, that was such an emotional packed adventure! I loved Ember and Chase's connection in the BREAKING POINT. In ARTICLE 5, they were broken, torn, and felt betrayed. They had this gap between them that they didn't have in BREAKING POINT! Chase was so over protective of Ember, but still respectful of her decisions and didn't stand "Too" much in the way when she wanted to do something he didn't like. I loved them together, they just had this chemistry that was electrifying, and HOT!!!
From now on when I see a book with Kristen Simmons name on it, I will be quick to pick it up and give it a shot! She is an phenomenal writer, and has broken my heart and repaired it over and over again! THANK YOU Kristen Simmons for such an emotional packed ride through the vicious city's within The ARTICLE 5 Series! :)
Overall, this is bombshell of a second book! It did NOT in NO WAY suffer from the second book syndrome! Nope, it really exceeded my exceptions for a thrilling follow-up to ARTICLE 5. And I am SO ready to finish this epic journey and battle for freedom from the deadly Federal Bureau of Reformation's!

The Paper Critic - Review

This book had me confused and torn apart, I wanted it to be better, I wanted the plot and the characters to grow and I felt more let down than anything. Ember was a brilliant strong woman at the end of Article 5, and yet in the beginning of this book she reverts back to her own self indulgent lonely self. She is hiding in the bunker of the resistance counting and labeling. There is so much more I wanted and expected from Ember at this point, but it's like she's afraid to lose everything close around her that she's secluded herself into a world that just can't keep going on if nothing changes.
Chase in the beginning is the one out in the open. He's the one helping and doing things, but that's always been Chase. The dependable one that seems to be thinking and working for the whole greater good of the two together. However, as Ember's character realizes she can't sit on the sidelines much longer and wants to help, he's the one trying to tell her no. Honestly I can't say that I blame him; if I loved someone as much as he did, I would fight to protect them and that seems to be what he's doing more so than anything. Furthermore. Chase in this book shows his military side more prevalent than in the previous book, and it shows just how vulnerable and how aggressive he can be. He's the character that made me smile and frankly brought this book a higher rating than it did.
Sean was a refreshing character, and his love for his girlfriend and the compete pursuit of her drives him crazy. He's as much like Chase, but not exactly. He comes from the FBR and seems to be more emotional and driven than Chase. Sean is the one who will jump first and think later, whereas Chase seems to think a bit more and be more cautious. The rash and dying devotion of Sean, is what makes his character refreshing and unique. I loved seeing his pain and sorrow, every time Rebecca was brought to the forefront.
The good thing of this book, and the one thing that stayed similar was the imagery and the scenery. Simmons can create a world unlike any other. I would say this world is more PG oriented, and I missed the first books gore and grotesque side. I wanted that dark gritty world, it's what made Article 5 fearsome and showed just how cruel the world was around them. Now in Breaking Point the only bit of grotesque was a different display, the RBF were shown parading people around who defied and were unable to do anything or just deformed in some way as a show of what it meant to defy the RBF. It just wasn't enough, the fear it instilled was unique, but lacked the emotional tole on the reader.
Now the other point I disliked about this book was the plot. The whole plot seemed to focus around Rebecca, Seans's lost girlfriend. It's been done over and over, and the more I look and think about the plots and the different events, I found that I had almost expected more originality out of this book. I was hoping there would be something more than just rescue the girl and run to safety. However, there just wasn't that much else to this book and I found I couldn't wrap my head around that. The struggle against the government is an addition by this is a dystopia that's to be expected, and I disregard that.
Overall this was just above a mediocre book. The character growth of a few of the characters was great and provided the spark to keep me interested, as well as the scenery and the world building. The plot was less than to be expected and at times I found myself knowing what the next turn would be. There was still a few surprises (no spoilers), but they weren't as often as I would have liked to keep me interested or give this book a better score. Furthermore the gritty and dark twisted nature of Article 5 was lost here, and I missed that most of all. I wanted to see more dark gritty nature in this book, that made the character quake in fear, but it wasn't there.
