In the 1950’s, Bobby Dellelo was sentenced to the notorious Lyman School for Boys reform school, a place where children were forced into gladiator-like combat on the weekends to amuse the guards. The winner got a candy bar. Child prisoners preyed on other child prisoners and the guards abused them all. He was only 13 years old. Unbeknownst to him, he had secured a place on an assembly line that all but pre-determined his future. By age 18 he was in maximum security at Walpole State Prison, and by age 22 he was serving life without the possibility of parole. Over the course of 40 years in prison, Dellelo escaped three different times, rose to the top of the prison hierarchy, became the prisoner’s union president, and was one of the architects behind the prison uprising in the 1970’s. He won his freedom in 2003 by writing his own appeal. Dellelo’s story is not just the story of one prisoner, but rather, the story of an industry whose success is dependent upon the continued failure of more than two million Americans. It is the story of an industry that built an assembly line that takes 13-year-old boys and transforms them into violent, habitual offenders, leaving both them and society as a whole to deal with the consequences of their dangerous product. Bobby Dellelo’s life experience is the story of that process. It is the story of The Factory.

I'm one of those people who reads pretty much EVERY book on prisons and even I was shocked by the story of Bobby Dellelo and what that story says about the prison industry. Lordan does an amazing job of clarifying the broken, corrupt nature of prisons in America. From the industry that actually profits if individuals don't leave their criminal lives behind to the institutions themselves that seem more interested in job security and warehousing individuals as if they were cattle, I don't think I've ever read a book that so clearly lays out, step by step, just how broken America's approach to prisons has become. Rather than minimizing criminal behavior, it has become an industry committed to ENSURING an ever growing amount of criminal behavior.
But far from writing an academicly useful book for a limited number of people, Lordan has tied the subject matter to the truly fascinating story of one inmate: Bobby Delello. Dellelo's life perfectly reflects the American prison experience, from his time in juvenile detention centers, to Walpole, to his many years spent in solitary confinement. If Lordan had created Dellelo's life story as a fiction, it would have seemed far fetched and unbelievable. Unfortunately, his story is all too real. Fortunately, it is also fascinating reading. Dellelo spent 40 years in prison for a murder when he never killed a single person. He escaped from supposedly inescapable prisons THREE separate times. He led a prisoner revolt in which the prisoners themselves took over the prison and ran it themselves for months, with fascinating results. The details of his story make this book more of a page turning crime story than a dry recitation of facts, and the result is a book I could not put down.
A MUST READ for anyone interested in crime, law, prisons, or justice. Truly one of the greats in the genre.

Unflinching and authentic

The title does not lie: this book is a journey through a system most people are lucky they will never experience. The first person accounts bring this story to life, while the narrative brings structure to this incredible story. Important, educational, and at times entertaining.
This is a must read for anyone interested in trying to understand the prison experience from the inside.

Great read! Chris does a great making it easy to picture the life in prison/reform school. It is interesting how he incorporates actual stories in the words of Bobby, rather than just giving his thoughts from research. I highly recommend it!
