Sentimental Journey

David Doyle's new Squadron at Sea series starts off with a bang with his first volume covering the USS Arizona. The style is a bit different from other books in that the story is told by a series of photographs with detailed, but generally concise explanations. Topics will tend to start with the building of the ship, its service life, modifications, notable events including combat damage or known occasions. With a different twist, the author wishes to end his work with the vessel's final disposition be it scrapped, sunk or turned into a museum which in the USS Arizon's case, all three occurred.
It's easy to get lost in all the video game violence or monday morning quarterbacking of historical analysis. Mr Doyle uses the unsual photograph assisted medium to relate a haunting, personal and deeply touching recount of the way things really were. He is well prepared, knowledgeable not only about the history, but of the human condition. The pictures are brimming with details, and the captions will often cue in the reader into details that may be difficult to see, not readily apparent, to eye candy or just to the background and spirit of the shots. Above all, the book comes across as very respectful of the ship and people on board, particularly the ones that perished before their time.
For all Historic Naval Ship buffs, this unusual book is a must read. This book would also be highly appealing to modelers. Of note, the photos are from many, many different sources some of which are easier to contact than others. The cost of obtaining all the photos from all the different sources yourself would be far, far higher and you'd still be without Mr. Doyle's wonderful captions that breathe life into them. The diversity of photographs and their significance showing ship updates pertinent to changing technology, cultural and geographhic references of the time period would also appeal to anthropologists or historians wishing to deepen their knowledge of the early 20th century. In short, this book is a real treat for anyone peripherally interested in the topic and I am happy I got to read it.

My husband and I were going to Pearl Harbor and I bought him this book before we went. He got a lot out of it and especially loved all the pictures. I am glad I purchased it for him!
