About the Author
HILLARY DRUMMOND-SIMPSON is first and foremost a mother who knows firsthand the challenges of raising a successful black man. Her broader perspective comes from being an educator for more than twenty years in three different states, during which she has found the recurring problem of underachieving African-American boys. In 2004, she set about solving the problem by forming Boys to Men, through which black boys are mentored by male leaders in the black community. This group has branches in Newark, New Jersey, and Conyers, Georgia, where Drummond-Simpson currently teaches.

Good Advice

This is a book you can and SHOULD read with your child; particularly the parts on "Advice to Boys." Some inspiring (but not so famous) men are featured, from teachers to entrepreneurs. Black men are doing some great things out there, despite the obstacles (and evening news). Success is not so much about money as it is about confidently making one's own positive path in this life. I think young men will read this and think, "If I was featured in this book, how would my story read?" Can't help but feel "proud to be Black" after reading this book. I will continue to refer to this book for years to come. Parents are encouraged to keep hoping, sacrificing and persevering for our children's sake.

Fantastic Read for Parents as Well

This book sounds like it is written for the black male but it is a also a great read for any parent. I like especially how the featured successful young men give advice to the parents. That was very helpful for me. I also found useful the way the author starts off with her own son and tells her trials as a parent. I could identify a lot with what she said. Most important for today's black man is the advice in the last chapter that tells them how to deal with law enforcement...this information could save our boys' lives!
